Eternals: 8 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About Druig

[ad_1]

In the Eternals movie, Druig gained a lot of sympathy from the audience as he lamented the poor decisions made by humanity that led to violence. Although his particular power of controlling people’s actions stripped them of free will, he wanted to use it to protect people. As a result, he was a conflicted and layered member of the Eternals.

The Druig of the movie doesn’t have as much in common with the Druig that originates in Jack Kirby’s Eternals comic book series. There is a lot about him that fans who are only familiar with the movies might not know.

The first Eternal to appear in the original comic book series is Ikaris. He got the bulk of the spotlight as the story of the Eternals living on Earth slowly unfolded. Ajak and Sersi (then written as Sersy) followed with Makkar and Sprite eventually rounded out the group of Eternals the MCU is familiar with.

However, Druig and Kingo didn’t make their debuts until the eleventh issue of the series when the Eternals’ leader, Zuras summoned all the Eternals on Earth to their home on Olympia. The storyline involved the Russian military attacking a Celestial while the Eternals had a meeting about how to move forward.

7 Druig Lives In Polaria

While Olympia is the fictional homeworld of the Eternals in the MCU, in the comics, it’s an actual location on Earth that’s considered the group’s home. However, not all the Eternals in the comics reside there. For example, Kingo makes a home in Japan while Druig and a group of other Eternals live in a place called Polaria.

Polaria is said to be situated in the far north – in the country that becomes Russia. The actual location isn’t shown in the comics until 1991. However, it’s there Druig makes his play for leadership. The Eternals that reside there choose to follow his father and later Druig himself.

6 Druig Is Frequently An Antagonist Of His People

Druig understands he is suspected of betrayal in Marvel comics

Although the Eternals are known to unite from their many homes across the planet to face extraterrestrial threats, the different groups of Eternals don’t always get along. Druig is most often suspected of betraying the rest of the group.

That suspicion is largely born from his power set, which is to influence other people’s actions. However, it’s also from his own desire for power. Druig is always ready to do whatever it takes to give himself more power, no matter who he hurts in the process. This has resulted in a few conflicts between him and other members of the Eternals, particularly Kingo, who always targets Druig as a potential threat first.

5 His Ability To Manipulate Matter Rivals Sersi

Sersi In The Eternals Movie And In Marvel Comics

While all of the Eternals have certain specialties when it comes to their power sets (just like in the MCU), they each have the power to manipulate cosmic energy. Technically, they all have the same powers as a result.

Druig is one of the few to manipulate matter in the comics the same way Sersi does. However, he doesn’t use this ability very often. Even the usual leader of the Eternals, Zuras, commends Druig as a “Changer” – one whose skill is on par with Sersi’s. Sersi is so good with her power that she actually changes herself into fellow Eternal Makkari when he’s killed.

4 Druig Was Raised As Ikaris’ Cousin

Although the Eternals are created and can be resurrected repeatedly, in the comics, they live in family structures before they learn that truth about themselves. The movie doesn’t depict any of the Eternals’ familial relationships in the same way.

Druig is the son of the Eternal, Valkin, and Valkin’s brother is the father of Ikaris, making the two cousins. When Ikaris’ father is killed, Valkin adopts him as his own son. The resulting relationship is part of what drives Druig’s resentment of Ikaris in the comics.

3 Druig Uses Traumatic Memories Against Others

The MCU makes it clear that Druig can force someone do exactly what he wants. However, the character has a lot of other mental abilities in the comics. For example, he can influence decision-making and access the most traumatic memory or the deepest fear of someone whose mind he probes. He can’t access all their memories: only one that gives him a lot of leverage.

Some of Druig’s earliest comic book appearances involve him pulling a traumatic memory from a target so he can use it to manipulate them. He uses their fear to control them instead of one of his better-known powers seen in the movie.

2 Thanos Killed Druig

Eternals 7 Thanos

One of Druig’s most recent betrayals of the Eternals involves him helping Thanos to become the elected leader of the group. He does so with the plan to kill Thanos later, but Thanos beats him to it.

While the two have never met in the MCU (as far as the audience knows), in the comics, Thanos and Druig are so consumed by their need for power that it’s no wonder the two couldn’t have a proper alliance.

1 Druig Has Used His Abilities To “Awaken” Eternals

Barry Keoghan as Druig in Eternals

There have been a few times in the comics where Eternals have lived among humans and blended in with society wherever they made their home. It’s a natural progression of living on the same planet for thousands of years. However, there have also been storylines in which members of the Eternals don’t remember who they are.

One storyline involved Sprite making all the Eternals believe they were humans. Druig’s own abilities helped him awaken his true nature when he was in the presence of other Eternals. And once he knew who he really was, he started using his powers of mental manipulation to track down other Eternals, wake them up, and coerce them into being his followers. This drive to gain traction for himself amongst the higher-ranking Eternals makes him crafty.
