The long-awaited sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife has delivered the payout that long-time fans of the 1984 film have been waiting for, with the original Ghostbusters crew returning to the big screen to face one of their most deadly opponents. Now, series actor Ernie Hudson has announced that more good news is on the way for Ghostbusters fans, with the announcement that a new video game is in the works. While the mildly wonderful Ghostbusters: The Video Game was widely assumed to be the last time we would see the original Ghostbusters on film, until Afterlife came along, now it appears that their presence in Ghostbusters: Afterlife may also be unlikely to be the final time we see them in action.
“I just got an email because we’re doing another video game,” said Hudson when he spoke on the Countdown City Geek YouTube channel. “They’re scheduling it now to do the recording and I’m not too sure [who’s] going to do it. I know me and [Dan Aykroyd], I think. I’m not sure [Bill Murray] will do anything on it. So, there will be another video game…When they’ll bring it out, I don’t know, but it’s definitely happening.”
While Hudson did not say so, it is safe to assume that whoever returns from the franchise to provide voiceovers for the game will be reprising their film roles. While there has been no official confirmation that such a game is in development, Illfonic co-founder Raphael Saadiq hinted at it previously on the Questlove Supreme podcast, saying, “Friday the 13th, the last one, and Predator, and we’re working on Ghostbusters right now.”
While there is no way of knowing for sure whether this is the same game, it appears to be highly plausible. The brand has been given a new lease of life thanks to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with legacy fans going into full nostalgia mode over the numerous easter eggs and tributes to the original film and its 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II.
When Ghostbusters: Afterlife debuted in theaters last month, it defied expectations, smashing opening weekend estimates and becoming one of just a few films this year to surpass the $100 million mark domestically. Videogame developers would be foolish not to try to cash in on the renewed interest. Hopefully they can make a game that’s superior to the last Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
