Embrace the Suck: Black Canary Film Is Happening at HBO Max
In a surprise move, a film adaptation of Black Canary is in the works. Jurnee Smollett will allegedly reprise her role as Dinah Lance, or Black Canary, in her own HBO Max mini film, following her debut with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the incredibly bad Birds of Prey. Sue Kroll (Birds of Prey) is back and producing under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner, while Misha Green, the creator of the quickly cancelled Lovecraft Country, is also on board to write the screenplay.

The project is still in its early stages of development, and no release date has been set. It’s unknown whether Green will also direct, although it looks likely “if her schedule permits it”. Smollett starred on Green’s programs Underground on WGN and Lovecraft Country on HBO, and the project signals a reunion between Smollett and Green. After Lovecraft Country was cancelled after one season, I can’t imagine Green is overbooked.

Jurnee Smollett made her debut as Black Canary in last year’s awful Birds of Prey, directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson. The DCEU seems to be expanding rapidly with many other movies and shows being developed exclusively for HBO Max. After recently premiering in theaters, The Suicide Squad will get the spinoff series Peacemaker in January. It’s also been reported that Michael B. Jordan is developing a Val-Zod Superman project for the streamer. Other projects recently announced for HBO Max include Blue Beetle with Xolo Mariduena and Batgirl with Leslie Grace.
Because Black Canary is still in the very early stages of development, there’s no word at this time when the project will make its way to HBO Max.
