Elden Ring Creator Opens Up About What Inspired the Game

[ad_1]

Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki discusses some of the biggest influences that inspired the fantasy world featured in the upcoming action RPG.

While the world of Elden Ring remains largely shrouded in mystery, Hidetaka Miyazaki offered a glimpse into the game’s overall story and tone, as the Elden Ring director recently discussed some of the game’s biggest inspirations.

Elden Ring may be one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, but that doesn’t mean its creator has forgotten about influential fantasy works of the past. “It’s difficult to give any one single inspiration that had a major impact on Elden Ring,” Miyazaki said during an interview with Edge Magazine. “There have been a lot of different works that influenced the creative process in various ways — The Lord Of The Rings, The Eternal Champion series of novels by Michael Moorcock, aspects of tabletop RPGs such as RuneQuest, etc. There are a lot of motifs and themes that I was able to pick from these various works that had an effect on the development of Elden Ring.”

In addition to classic fantasy, Elden Ring also draws inspiration from the mind behind arguably the most popular modern fantasy series, as developer FromSoftware discussed the involvement of A Song of Fire & Ice author George R.R. Martin during an interview last year. “George R.R. Martin wrote the original mythos for this game,” FromSoftware spokesperson Yasuhiro Kitao said. “He created a backstory or a history that takes place many, many years before the events of the game itself, and he wrote this in collaboration with [Elden Ring creator] Hidetaka Miyazaki… Once that original mythos was complete, George R.R. Martin was kind enough to leave that in our hands, so to speak, and to do with that what we will.”

Players were able to experience the world of Elden Ring for themselves when a network test went live several months back. With a vast open-world similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and brutal difficulty ripped straight out of Dark Souls, Elden Ring builds upon previous Soulsborne games by encouraging exploration of not only its environment but of its expansive mythology as well. Though such a large, detailed open world may seem like it would carry an equally large download size, a recent leak reported the PlayStation 5 version of Elden Ring will require a reasonable 44.47GB of free space to download and play. The file size is presumably the same on other platforms, but a Day One patch may require considerably more memory.

Following a one-month delay back in October, Elden Ring is now slated to arrive Feb. 25 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
