Ever since the end of King in Black, Eddie Brock has found himself in possession of powers beyond anything he could have imagined. As the successor to Knull’s throne and the center of the symbiote Hive, Eddie has found himself able to traverse the world and stars in a way that effectively makes him omnipresent.
But as Eddie explores these new abilities, he increasingly convinces himself that he can use them to send himself through even time itself. And in Venom #35, Eddie expressly states his intent to change how events played out in the past. And if that’s the case, then the new King in Black may be setting himself up to be the next target of the Time Variance Authority.
Even though his new duties have aged him greatly in a very short time, Eddie is more powerful than ever. Thanks to Eddie’s newfound connection to the rest of the symbiote Hive as its center, he is able to pilot multiple symbiotes all over the universe simultaneously, able to meet with the Avengers at their Arctic base and have lunch with Spider-Man in New York at the same time he’s in a far-off part of the galaxy.
Aside from existing in multiple places at once, Eddie has found with practice that he is able to traverse his own memories and seemingly those of the symbiotes he is connected to, even across dimensions. While it still isn’t clear exactly how far this reach extends, Eddie is convinced that he could use it to manifest himself in other times entirely, and that could be a big problem for Marvel’s biggest bureaucracy.
As made famous on the Disney+ series Loki, the Time Variance Authority is the governing force of the timeline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its a seriously powerful one in the primary Marvel Universe as well. Ever since their first appearance in 1986’s Thor #371 by Walter Simonson and Sal Buscema, the T.V.A. have a multiversal operation dedicated to protecting the timeline at all costs.
If Eddie Brock truly is able to use his connection to the symbiote Hive to manifest himself physically in his own memories, whether by manipulating the Codex of a past version of another symbiote or some yet to be revealed means, he would surely draw the ire of the T.V.A. Considering the fact that they have a literally endless number of resources at their disposal, there is little doubt that they would eventually be able to overpower even the King in Black without having to call upon the Time Keepers to help them.
From the context of his statements, it’s unlikely that Eddie Brock has anything particularly nefarious in mind. At this point, all he seems to be concerned with is potentially improving his young life and his relationship with his father. While that might seem innocuous enough, it’s still the kind of thing that could cause countless ripple effects across the rest of the timeline.
While there’s no guarantee that Eddie will be able to reach back in time and change things, that isn’t going to stop Brock from trying, and he could create a whole new dimension of problems for himself if he succeeds.
