Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is a prolific anime series that’s been able to withstand the test of time. It’s arguably even more popular now than during its peak of popularity during the 1990s. The Dragon Ball series has found ways to evolve over the years and extend its story, but each fresh development requires increasingly powerful characters who now have access to godly reservoirs of power.
There are countless battles in Dragon Ball and the very best fights are the ones where the opponents are evenly matched, but the series also has its share of showdowns where the altercation is over before the losing party even realizes what’s happened.
10 Goku Literally Overwhelms Yakon With His Power
During the infancy of Dragon Ball Z’s Buu Saga, Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan must first square off against Babidi’s Majin minions while time is bided before Buu’s awakening. Each Saiyan takes on a different opponent and Goku’s battle against the alien Yakon is more of an excuse to show off the new strength that he’s achieved.
Yakon’s gimmick is that he absorbs energy to turn into his own strength. Goku unveils his Super Saiyan 2 form for the first time and the power is so immense that Yakon explodes.
9 Majin Buu Immediately Establishes A New Status Quo Against Babidi
The first chapter of Dragon Ball Z’s Buu Saga involves Babidi acquiring energy from mass civilians and particularly powerful individuals in order to trigger Majin Buu’s awakening. It doesn’t take Babidi very long to reach this milestone, but he faces a harsh reality once Buu enters the picture.
Rather than function as Babidi’s willing agent of chaos, Buu makes it clear that he has no patience for this and isn’t anyone’s puppet. He ends Babidi’s life in a gruesome fashion and despite Babidi’s extreme magical abilities, he’s still helpless here.
8 Dragon Ball Z Takes Off The Kiddie Gloves When Reliable Yamcha Is Helpless To A Saibaman
Dragon Ball Z remains compelling throughout its entire run, but there’s an extra level of suspense that surrounds the Saiyan Saga due to how many casualties are experienced. Characters like Yamcha, who were a valuable component of the original Dragon Ball series, soon become irrelevant and they can’t keep up with the new standards of strength.
Yamcha’s defeat is rough because it’s a Saibaman that detonates and takes him out. These are weak tools of destruction and Yamcha still can’t keep up with them, let alone the Saiyans that spawned them.
7 Goku’s Triumphant Arrival On Namek Coincides With Recoome’s Elimination
The Ginyu Force represent the perfect mix of silly and dangerous and despite their theatrics, they pose a major challenge for Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin on Planet Namek. It takes Goku a long time, but when he finally arrives on Namek, one of his first orders of business is to take out Recoome and demonstrate how much he’s grown as a fighter. Recoome has no idea what’s hit him.
Goku is equally nonplussed by the Ginyu’s Force Burter and Jeice, but he at least bides his time with them rather than the immediate disposal that he administers on Recoome.
6 Spopovich Brutally Attacks Videl In One Of Dragon Ball’s More Violent Matches
One of the most exciting aspects of Dragon Ball Z’s time skip following the events of the Cell Saga are the many new characters that enter the picture. Videl is a welcome female fighter, who are in short supply in Dragon Ball. Videl is decently strong for a human and she holds her own within the World Martial Arts Tournament.
However, she unfortunately faces the Majin-influenced Spopovich, whose muscles are about the size of Videl’s head. Spopovich’s aggressive assault on Videl is extremely hard to watch and its one-sided nature makes it even worse.
5 There’s Such A Power Discrepancy Between Chiaotzu & Nappa That Even Self-Destruct Is Useless
There are genuine stakes at the start of Dragon Ball Z when Vegeta and Nappa announce their impending arrival on Earth. A great deal of time is spent on training for this inevitability, especially since Goku is temporarily out of the picture.
It’s devastating to see that most of this preparation is all for naught and the heroes are completely outclassed by their opponents. Nappa dominates the battlefield and in a desperate effort, Chiaotzu self-destructs to take out Nappa with him. Nappa is no worse for wear after the sacrifice, which makes it slightly more devastating than Tien’s defeat.
4 Vegeta’s Fight Against Android 19 Proves That Machines Are Inferior To Man
Dragon Ball Z does some effective storytelling with its incorporation of a number of evil Androids that are early obstacles before Cell is able to take over as the series’ dominant villain. Androids 17 and 18 become major threats in what follows, but Dragon Ball also allows some of Dr. Gero’s Androids to become cannon fodder to help prove the progress of other characters.
Vegeta’s triumphant return, as well as the debut of his Super Saiyan achievement comes at the expense of Android 19. Vegeta destroys the inferior Android before proceeding to completely obliterate the machine.
3 Goku’s Effortless Attack On Nappa Sets The Stage For A Saiyan Showdown
Dragon Ball Z falls into a bit of a pattern where supporting characters need to keep the peace and stall villains until Goku is able to show up and pick up the slack. This precedent is set with Goku’s return from the afterlife to take on Nappa and Vegeta.
Everyone knows that Goku has become much more powerful, but he handles Nappa in a single blow, which is made even more impressive after all of the characters that Nappa previously eliminated. It’s ultimately Vegeta that disposes of Nappa, but both Goku and Vegeta defeat him with minimal effort.
2 Gohan’s Fearless Assault On Perfect Cell Highlights A Series’ Worth Of Development
The first half of Dragon Ball Z carefully lays the groundwork for Gohan to rise into the position of the series’ main character and replace Goku as the superior Saiyan. Akira Toriyama backpedals on this approach and it remains Goku’s series to win, but a brief period where Gohan gets to be the hero is his battle against Cell.
The culmination of all of Gohan’s training is that he’s the first to reach the plateau of Super Saiyan 2 and he wastes no time to prove that Cell isn’t anything that he needs to be worried about.
1 Future Trunks’ Quick Disposal Of Frieza Is As Shocking As It Is Impressive
There’s nothing as exciting as a strong entrance and one of the most powerful debuts in the entirety of the series is when a new Super Saiyan, Future Trunks, appears out of nowhere and takes care of both a rebuilt Frieza and his father.
This occurs after the series devotes dozens of episodes to Goku’s prolonged battle against Frieza, so it’s quite shocking to then see Future Trunks defeat him with a sword and then a single energy blast. It also reinforces just how powerful Super Saiyans are and the direction that the series is headed down.
