Dragon Ball is no stranger to heavy emotional sequences. Sometimes, the heroes must face great loss or turns of events before things get better.
There’s a lot to love and celebrate in Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. For more than three decades it’s proven itself to be an important pillar of the anime industry. Dragon Ball’s story has gradually evolved and its characters continue to experiment with unbelievable power. Dragon Ball’s core values about heroism remains unchanged.
Good always manages to triumph over evil in Dragon Ball, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t also a great deal of unexpected tragedies. Dragon Ball is no stranger to heavy emotional sequences and sometimes the heroes must face great loss or confusing turns of events before things get better.
10 The Moon Gets Destroyed
Dragon Ball hardly feels like it needs to obey the laws of reality or be grounded. There are still a few more exaggerated moments that stand out. The moon plays an important role in Dragon Ball. The moon is the trigger for the dangerous Great Ape transformations that some Saiyans experience. Since the moon is seen as such a liability, it’s actually destroyed as a quick solution to disarm the Great Ape form. This has become a hotly contested moment – the absence of a moon on Earth would have major ramifications for the planet.
9 Imperfect Cell Viciously Drains Humans
Each of the villains in Dragon Ball assert their evil authority in different ways. The introduction of Cell marks one of the few truly horrific moments in Dragon Ball. Imperfect Cell requires the absorption of the Androids in order to achieve perfection, but he can also drain humans dry to get a quick fix of power. Some of the darkest visuals from Dragon Ball come from Imperfect Cell’s assault on an unsuspecting city where many civilians are drained dry and left as grotesque husks. It immediately establishes Cell as a malevolent force.
8 Goku Gives Cell Senzu Beans And Heals The Enemy
Goku is one of the most beloved anime characters of all time – although his innocence and continued ability to see the good in others can lead to frustrating moments in characterization. Goku loves to give his opponents a fair shot at rehabilitation, which has grown into one of the character’s most annoying traits.
One of the more polarizing examples in Dragon Ball is when Goku decides to heal Cell with a Senzu Bean so that he can give Gohan a proper challenge. It’s a controversial moment because it shows just how much Goku’s battle instincts can blind him.
7 Nappa And The Saibamen Cull The Herd
Earth has a wide range of protectors, all of which train and come together for when Vegeta and Nappa invade the planet. These supporting heroes do their best to protect the planet until Goku arrives. The number of casualties is staggering. It’d be one thing for one or two characters to meet their ends here, but this early battle in Dragon Ball takes out Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, and even Piccolo. It establishes a new status quo in the franchise for the power that characters need to have in order to survive.
6 Goku Watches His Best Friend Die By Frieza’s Hand
Plenty of villains have come after Frieza, but the galactic tyrant consistently finds ways to return to the narrative. He’s by far Dragon Ball Z’s most persistent cockroach. The battle against Frieza on Planet Namek is one of the longest fights from the entire series. It kicks off Dragon Ball’s tradition for villains to have copious amounts of transformations and forms. Frieza cruelly mocks Goku with the execution of Krillin, which pushes him past his breaking point and turns him into a Super Saiyan for the first time. It’s brutal to watch this kind-hearted character meet such a grisly end.
5 Majin Vegeta’s Self Destruct Falls Short
Vegeta has some of the most satisfying character development out of any Dragon Ball character, but he enters his darkest period when he succumbs to Babidi’s temptations and becomes Majin Vegeta. Majin Vegeta causes substantial damage to Goku and many innocent civilians.
It’s a devastating turn for Vegeta’s character. He attempts to redeem himself through a temperamental self-destruction that will take Buu out with him. It’s very shocking to see Vegeta submit to such a strategy, but even more so when it’s unsuccessful and his death turns out to be in vain.
4 Zamasu Takes Over Goku’s Body And Kills His Family
One of the more committed and compelling villains to arise in the Dragon Ball franchise is Goku Black. Goku is just one part of Future Zamasu’s layered scheme to eliminate all mortals from existence. Fused Zamasu grows into such an apocalyptic problem that he requires the intervention of Omni-King Zeno to be eliminated. One of the darkest moments from this saga is when Future Zamasu successfully takes over Goku’s body – only to immediately kill his family while in this new form. They don’t even get a chance to understand what’s even happened.
3 Golden Frieza Successfully Blows Up The Earth
Frieza returns to assert his dominance in a major way in Dragon Ball Super with the reveal of his new Golden form. Golden Frieza isn’t much of a challenge for Goku and Vegeta’s new Super Saiyan Blue strength, but Frieza is still able to manipulate the circumstances to broker a crooked victory. Golden Frieza channels his energy into the Earth and successfully blows up the planet. It’s a huge surprise when the destruction of the Earth occurs. Whis is fortunately able to reverse this through the time reversal capabilities of a Temporal Do-Over.
2 Hercule’s Dog, Bee, Gets Executed
Audiences are used to seeing heroes face unfortunate ends when they put themselves in harm’s way and defend the universe. But, it’s different when someone innocent passes away, especially when it’s just an animal. There are some extended periods of chaos during Dragon Ball Z’s Buu Saga, and criminals try to take advantage of the unrest. Smitty and Van Zant cross paths with Hercule and Buu and they end up taking out Hercule’s lovable dog, Bee. It’s a mortifying act that traumatizes Buu so much that it results in the creation of Evil Buu.
1 Buu’s Human Extinction Attack Wipes Out The Planet’s Population
The powerful villains in Dragon Ball often tease grand plans for destruction, but they don’t actually come to pass. Buu is such a frightening change of pace because he follows through on his threats and exhibits zero empathy for the human race. Super Buu’s Human Extinction Attack is a vicious technique that targets and wipes out nearly the entire population. Situations often feel dire in Dragon Ball, but this is an unprecedented level of loss that really makes Buu’s attack seem like the end of times.
