There are several anime series that become pop culture phenomena and are emblematic of the industry. Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is one of them. Toriyama’s shonen series made its debut in 1984, but now more than 35 years later it’s still one of the most popular anime series of all time.
Part of Dragon Ball’s enduring success is due to its wide range of compelling characters, most of which exhibit unbelievable strength. Dragon Ball teases that Goku’s son, Gohan, will be one of the most powerful fighters in the universe, but there are still people he pales in comparison to. Gohan’s phenomenal strength isn’t enough for some of the dangerous forces that appear in Dragon Ball.
10 Beerus’ God Of Destruction Powers Leave Gohan Overwhelmed
God of Destruction, Lord Beerus, marks a major turning point in Dragon Ball’s history. His character maintains knowledge of the multiverse, new tiers of celestial deities, as well as information on the elusive Super Saiyan God transformation. Beerus wants to fight against the superlative Saiyan, which turns out to be an honor that falls upon Goku. Goku struggles to keep up with Beerus, even in his Super Saiyan God strength, which is a testament to the power of a God of Destruction. Goku’s still weaker than Beerus, even after his progress. This makes Gohan helpless.
9 Vegeta Is A Saiyan Prince Who Never Wants To Settle For Second Place
One of the most rewarding relationships that Dragon Ball develops is the friendly rivalry between Goku and Vegeta. The two Saiyans continually try to one-up one another as they follow in each other’s footsteps and eventually diverge in their approaches to power. Gohan’s power has peaked with his Ultimate form, which is nowhere near Vegeta’s full strength as a Super Saiyan Blue, let alone his Ultra Ego transformation. Gohan’s skills have softened, whereas Vegeta never stops improving his powers and strengthening his fighting spirit.
8 Surviving Cerelian, Granolah, Is Among Universe 7’s Strongest
The latest story arc explored in Dragon Ball Super’s manga, details the destructive history of the Saiyans and the vengeance that Granolah seeks for the genocide of his people. Granolah tentatively becomes the strongest in Universe 7 through a volatile Dragon Ball wish, yet he still needs to figure out how to control this new power.
Granolah is able to confidently defend against Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta. The fact that Gohan doesn’t even try to take out Granolah speaks to how hopelessly he’s outclassed here.
7 Golden Frieza Destroys The Earth And Is Endlessly Scheming
Frieza proves himself to be Dragon Ball’s most persistent villain and he undergoes a major return in Dragon Ball Super, first with his new Golden form, and then later through his cooperation in the Tournament of Power. Frieza has a tumultuous history with Goku and Vegeta, but it’s important to remember that Gohan also faced off against this threat when he was just a child. Gohan has witnessed Frieza’s murderous actions first hand, but there’s not much that he can do to defend himself against him. Their time together in the Tournament of Power only highlights the discrepancy in their power levels.
6 The Full Extent Of Whis’ Angel Powers Have Yet To Be
Whis is someone who often shares his screen time with Beerus. He functions as the more aggressive of the duo. Whis has a very reserved demeanor, but it’s frequently implied that Whis’ powers exceed that of Beerus. Whis isn’t just incredibly strong, he helps Goku master the ways of Ultra Instinct and can rewind time for a few seconds in extreme situations. Gohan and Whis have never come to blows before, most likely because Gohan is smart enough to realize that he’s nowhere near the strength of an Angel.
5 Broly Can Take On A Fused Super Saiyan Blue Powerhouse
Broly is one of Dragon Ball’s most controversial characters due to how he’s only recently entered the series’ canon in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The current version of Broly has a slightly revised history compared to his DBZ counterpart, but his Legendary Super Saiyan status is deadlier than ever.
It takes the effort of Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta to defeat Broly, and even then victory isn’t guaranteed. Gohan knows that Broly has him sufficiently beat, regardless of which version of the character is being discussed.
4 Gohan’s Contributions Against Goku Black Are Completely Lacking
Dragon Ball Super contains some of the most creative villains from the entire franchise. Goku Black brings a genuine mystery into the anime as everyone tries to figure out the circumstances behind this evil Goku doppelgänger. Goku Black turns out to be highly persistent, especially after he joins with his other half to become Fused Zamasu. Fused Zamasu is too much for Vegito Blue and Future Trunks’ Sword of Hope. It’s ultimately Omni-King Zeno that resolves this problem. Gohan barely makes an impression on Goku Black, he’s likely disturbed by the very nature of this enemy.
3 Uub Is Filled With Latent Power That He Doesn’t Fully Understand
Uub remains one of Dragon Ball’s most tantalizing lingering plot threads. Uub is the reincarnation of Kid Buu’s evil and the final episodes of Dragon Ball Z confirm that he’s set to play a major role in the future. Goku abandons his family to help foster Uub’s abilities and he also lends his strength during a pivotal moment in the fight against Moro. Uub is still a child and he doesn’t fully understand his power, but it’s likely that he’d beat Gohan when put under pressure. Goku doesn’t leave to train Gohan like he does with Uub.
2 Jiren Is The Pride Of Universe 11
Tournaments are a common occurrence in Dragon Ball, but Super’s anime involves a colossal free-for-all between dozens of the strongest fighters from across the multiverse. Universe 7 makes swift work of most of the other teams, but Universe 11 sticks around to the end, thanks to Jiren. Jiren is a stoic Pride Trooper who becomes Goku’s biggest obstacle. Jiren’s strength is what pushes Goku to become Ultra Instinct for the first time, which still isn’t enough to take out Jiren. Gohan is left in awe during all of this.
1 Goku Is A Constant Inspiration That His Son Will Never Surpass
The original Dragon Ball is Goku’s story, but the tide starts to turn in Dragon Ball Z. DBZ sets up Gohan to surpasses his father, but his title as the strongest Saiyan is short-lived. Gohan’s progress stagnates following Buu’s arrival and only becomes more complacent in Dragon Ball Super. Goku repeatedly reaches new heights, which even impresses the likes of Gods, whereas Gohan’s growth is much less obvious.
