Double-Dip Failure: Morbius Just Proved Twitter Isn’t Reality

Sony’s attempt to bring a critically panned Morbius back into theaters due to social media pressure has predictably backfired. Despite the film’s original run of disappointing box office success and mixed reviews, Marvel fans online claimed to have been clamoring for a sequel to Morbius in recent weeks. As additional fans joined the petition, Sony appeared to believe that the renewed interest in Morbius would result in people paying money to watch it if it were to return to the big screen.

Now, it appears that the bulk of those thirsty Morbius fans weren’t actually serious. Despite the fact that the picture was rescreened in over 1000 theaters across North America, Morbius raised $300,000 for the weekend. On Friday, it grossed $85K, giving it an average of $82 per theater. The picture didn’t even come close to entering the top ten list of the weekend’s highest-grossing films, proving what honest, real life people already knew, that a re-release was not worth the effort.

Daniel Espinosa directed Morbius, which was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. It stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a man who transforms into a “living vampire” as a result of a botched blood transfusion. It’s not the worst film this year, but it’s the worst Spider-Man related movie ever.

The film is based on the Marvel Comics Spider-Man villain and is a part of Sony’s Marvel Universe with the Venom films and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. It has a worldwide box office haul of just over $163 million which can be considered underwhelming when compared to most other superhero movies released in recent years. The reviews were abysmal with Morbius scoring a 17% rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Prediction? There will be no sequel.
