Secret Invasion is a highly anticipated MCU series coming to Disney+. But its new logo may tie to a classic villain never seen in live-action.
Many Marvel Cinematic Universe properties are coming to theaters and Disney+, including Secret Invasion. While it’s clear that the series will follow an invasion of Earth by the shape-shifting Skrulls, its most recent logo change has a specific quality that raises an eyebrow. Though the green and purple point to the Kree Empire’s enemies, they also call back to a largely unknown villain from the X-Men: the Phalanx. If true, their inclusion could fundamentally alter the MCU in yet another massive way.
Secret Invasion by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu follows the Skrull Empire unleashing their sleeper cells across the world. Disguised as some of the Marvel Universe’s strongest heroes, Earth is caught at a disadvantage. However, what’s left of the world’s heroes and villains band together to fend off the invading threat and save Earth. For now, the synopsis of the series isn’t confirmed. While it’s fair to assume the Skrulls could be the villains, the grid-like lines make any classic X-Men fan ponder how the Phalanx could play a part in the franchise.
The Phalanx are a techno-organic species that seek to spread their influence and corrupt everything on the planet to join its hive mind. While their inclusion seems out of place in a show tied directly to Skrulls, their history makes them a semi-viable choice to threaten Nick Fury and co. For example, in the comics, the Phalanx have been in the custody of the Kree Empire, enemies of the Skrull, and by extension, the Earth. If the Phalanx were to escape, they could piggyback off Kree sleeper cells to get to Earth.
With the planet being in a state of constant technological advancements, Earth is primed to be infected by a technology-based threat. By infecting phones and other machinery, most of humanity would succumb to the virus in a matter of moments. Their threat would immediately take precedence over any potential Skrull threat. Adding to the theory is the established confusion that the Skrulls are, for the most part, not at odds with Earth in the MCU. By surprising fans with a new enemy, it avoids forcing the Skrull into enemies they don’t appear to be in the first place.
Another interesting advancement, thanks to the Phalanx, could be the introduction of mutants to the MCU. In the comics, mutants are less susceptible to the Transmode virus that assimilates others to the hive mind. By capitalizing on this attribute, Secret Invasion could expose audiences to humans who are either mutants or have the X-Gene lying dormant in their DNA. Additionally, by including a loose introduction to mutants, the writers could bring any of it at any point, using the Phalanx as a catalyst event.
Ultimately, the idea of the Phalanx is purely speculative, as Marvel Studios has shown that any deviation from the source material is rarely drastic. But by speculating a new enemy for Fury to confront, the Phalanx shows how many doors have opened in the MCU. Since Iron Man, audiences have been shown how many directions the franchise can go, and while the Phalanx is an extreme assumption, it’s not entirely outside the realm of speculation. As a result, future theories could go even deeper into the mythos, showing how far the MCU can go.
Secret Invasion does not yet have a release date on Disney+, but it’s assumed to arrive next year.
