After the dismal opening for The Suicide Squad, it was kind of surprising that Warner Bros. decided to move forward with their “Day & Date” release plan for the Denis Villeneuve directed Dune film. But the studio stuck to it and had a better than expected opening this weekend, pulling in $40.1M, easily the best start for a Warner Bros. film both during the pandemic and with the simultaneous release on HBO Max.
But the opening isn’t without controversy, particularly in China, who is known for this type of racist behavior, particularly with Star Wars. As Breitbart’s Kurt Zindulka reports:
A promotional poster for Warner Bros’ science-fiction epic Dune produced for the Chinese market has removed a black main character from the image, drawing comparisons to similar treatment of a Star Wars actor in the communist country.
A Chinese promotional poster for the remake of Dune failed to feature Trinidadian-heritage actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster, despite her being prominently displayed in the original American version. Other Chinese promotional materials for the film have also failed to include the British actress.
Duncan-Brewster starred in the film as Dr Liet Kynes, a character who ironically was described as a white man in the original Frank Herbert novel of the same name.
Both Duncan-Brewster and Boyega have been open supporters of the radical Black Lives Matter movement, with Boyega going so far as to lead a BLM protest in London last year. At the time of this publication, the Dune star has not commented on the apparent racist treatment against her in China.
It is not clear if the decision to remove the Duncan-Brewster was made by Warner Bros. Pictures or by Legendary East, a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group, which has been handling the movie in China.
Nonetheless, and in spite of obvious racist behavior, Hollywood will continue to scold Americans about guns, climate change, and hypocritically… racism, while never commenting on their acquiescence to the Chinese Communist Party and their censorship and racism.
Outside of the U.S. where the film is theatrical only, the film is doing very well bringing its global box office total to $220.7 million. Reviews have been extremely good and the film should have a good second week with it’s biggest competition over the Halloween weekend will be the horror film Antlers and the drama/horror/mystery/thriller Last Night in Soho. Rounding out the top 5 weekend box office, Halloween Kills took in $14.5M, No Time to Die grabbed another $11.9M, Venom: Let There Be Carnage continues with another $9.1M and the animated film Ron’s Gone Wrong pulls in $7.3M on its opening weekend.
