Doctor Strange’s Ultimate Sacrifice Jumpstarted a New Mystical Era

[ad_1]

Doctor Strange’s ultimate fate has finally kicked off the next era of magic for the Marvel Universe, and the next Sorcerer Supreme may not be ready for it.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Death of Doctor Strange #5, available now from Marvel.

The world has fallen into absolute chaos in the wake of the vicious murder of its Sorcerer Supreme. Thankfully, those closest to Doctor Strange, as well as an echo of himself, have all joined forces to save the world in his stead. Not only that, they have even managed to uncover Doctor Strange’s killer, they have also brought him back to the land of the living. Even if it is only for enough time to reconcile his biggest mistake, Doctor Strange’s short-lived return has closed out the most remarkable chapter of his story, as well as kicked off a brand new one for Earth’s next Sorcerer Supreme.

The echo of Doctor Strange has unmasked Kaecilius as his true killer, and even managed to bring himself back to life for a short time thanks to his mastery of the darker Mystic Arts. Apart from finally bringing to an end the onslaught of mystical threats that had flooded into our world, this victory has also given the real Doctor Strange a chance to finally reconcile with the Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension (and his ex-wife), Clea. The moment they are able to share together in The Death of Doctor Strange #5 by Jed MacKay, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela, and VC’s Cory Petit is heartfelt and poignant, although it is also the last one that they will likely ever have. Doctor Strange may have been able to come back for a short time, but his ultimate fate can only be delayed rather than avoided entirely. Strange’s true demise might be devastating, yet it is also one that rings in a new era for the mystic corner of the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the Marvel Universe is actually ready for Clea to take up Doctor Strange’s mantle.

While there is little doubt that the Earth will be well protected under Clea’s watch, the question of how well it will receive her is far from answered. Even though she has been a part of the Marvel Universe ever since 1964’s Strange Tales #126 by Stan Lee and Dick Ayers, Clea hasn’t had the chance to make much of an impression on the same parts of it that Doctor Strange has. Clea has fought alongside previous iterations of the Defenders, but her working relationship with many of Marvel’s most important heroes range from little to none. Many of those closest to Doctor Strange are still grieving his loss, and now they are going to be faced with reconciling those feelings as they embrace a complete stranger as his replacement. As hard as it is to imagine Clea ending up at odds with any of Earth’s other heroes, she is all but assured to find herself in more than a few awkward situations at the very least.

All of this coupled with the fact that Clea is quite possibly suffering from Strange’s loss more than anyone else doesn’t bode well for Earth’s next Sorcerer Supreme. That much stress stacked on top of trying to live up to her recently deceased ex-husband’s reputation is sure to make Clea’s next undertaking her greatest yet. Thankfully, she is more than powerful enough to take on whatever threats await her. Hopefully she is able to navigate the complex and difficult relationships she will be making as well.
