Doctor Strange 2’s latest merch reveals tease the possibility of Sleepwalker appearing. But what can he do, and how could he impact the MCU?
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promises to deep dive into the multiverse and all of its beauties and horrors. But, for now, there is still a lot of information that is left unknown. With rumors posited but not confirmed, some of the best ways to get confirmation is through merchandise. A wave of Marvel Legends has been revealed for this film that show action figure version of the film’s characters and other comics-related names. But one addition to the wave may be a subtle tease of what’s coming in the movie.
In the upcoming Marvel Legends wave, one of the figures announced was an obscure character named Sleepwaker. Although mystical in origin, the character actually ties to a much larger universe only now being deeply explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But who is the character, and what could his possible appearance bring to the larger MCU’s future?
Who is Sleepwalker?
Created by Bob Budiansky and Bret Blevins, Sleepwaker first appeared in Sleepwalker #1 in 1991. Similar to the members of the TVA, Sleepwalker is a powerful supernatural being that acts as a dream police officer. Monitoring the minds of those sleeping, he and those like him protect innocents from enemies that threaten an innocent’s dreams. However, what makes Sleepwalker so unique in the Marvel universe are his circumstances. Unlike others in the dream police, Sleepwalker was tricked by his enemy, Cobweb, and linked to the body of a person named Rick Sheridan. In doing so, he protects dreams while Sheridan is asleep but is pulled back, often inconveniently, whenever he awakens.
To protect the sleeping, Sleepwalker has enhanced strength, speed, stamina and flight. He also has a warp gaze that fires from his eyes and turns objects into anything he needs. He can also absorb mind energy, assimilate to any language and can enhance mental powers. However, his largest weakness lies with his human vessel. When Rick awakens at any point, he is forced back to his mind, making it hard when he’s busy saving lives.
Who Are His Enemies?
For most of Sleepwalker’s comic book run, he faces a collection of original enemies. However, one of the most dangerous is also a classic villain named Nightmare. Initially a Doctor Strange villain, Nightmare feeds on his victims by entering their dreams and making them nightmares. As a result, his powers become even greater, making him a major enemy of the dream police. There’s also the villain known as Cobweb, who placed Sleepwalker into Sheridan’s mind in the first place. Cobweb is a demon who prowls the mindscape causing chaos wherever possible, and shows just how dangerous the dreaming plane can be.
What Could His Appearance Mean For The MCU?
For now, it’s not confirmed that Sleepwalker will be entering the Multiverse of Madness with Doctor Strange. But with the many doors opening in the multiverse, it’s a great opportunity for enemies to begin their own plans. Should monsters like Nightmare and Cobweb appear, it will take more than sorcerers to top them. As a result, Sleepwalker will have to help stop them while Strange deals with bigger problems. Sleepwalker also represents just how vast the supernatural realm of Marvel is, and as the dangers grow, it will need heroes strong enough to stop them, heroes, just like Sleepwalker.
