In Ghost Rider: Kushala #2, the Spirit Rider embarks on a collision course with Doctor Doom, who is assembling a very powerful weapon.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Ghost Rider: Kushala #2, available now on Marvel Unlimited.
Although the Fantastic Four’s archnemesis is most famous for his unparalleled scientific genius, one of Dr. Doom’s lesser-known attributes is his mastery of the mystical arts. Inspired to study magic during his childhood after his mother was killed and condemned to Hell through the machinations of Mephisto, years of intense training and research have molded Victor von Doom into one of the world’s most accomplished sorcerers, to the point that Dr. Strange has admitted that Doom is a worthy candidate for the title of Sorcerer Supreme.
While Dr. Doom’s original interest in magic was fueled by the desire to save his mother’s soul from eternal suffering, his descent into villainy twisted that idealistic curiosity into an insatiable lust for power and control. Ghost Rider: Kushala #2 (by Taboo, B. Earl, Guillermo Sanna, Vanesa R. Del Rey, Jordie Bellaire, and VC’s Joe Sabino) highlights the horrifying scope of Dr. Doom’s arcane ambitions by revealing that he seeks to obtain the six Wands of Watoomb; a set of magical relics that could grant Doom the power to command fate itself.
Ghost Rider: Kushala introduces Olivia Obtera, a paranormal journalist and a descendent of Kushala, an Apache woman who became the Spirit Rider after summoning a Spirit of Vengence to avenge the death of her family at the hands of the U.S. Army. While telling her ancestor’s story to her young daughter Heather Rae, a pair of Doombots teleport into Olivia’s home through a portal and attempt to abduct them both. The sight of a Doombot grabbing her daughter fills Olivia with enough rage to summon the spirit of Kushala herself, who possesses Oliva to give her the strength she needs to defeat the Doombots. Unfortunately, the robots that are holding Heather Rae escape through a portal and close it before Olivia can follow. Kushala explains to Olivia that Dr. Doom is seeking out the Wands of Watoomb and that he wished to abduct her and Heather Rae to keep Kushala from stopping him.
Like Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto, the Wands of Watoomb are ancient and powerful magical artifacts created by and named after a mortal sorcerer who managed to transform into a higher being known as a Mystic Principality. The Wands of Watoomb possess the ability to absorb, store, amplify, and re-direct magical energy, allowing their wielders to cast powerful magic spells. The wands have been used previously to open interdimensional portals, enhance the casting abilities of other sorcerers, and fire blasts of magical force. A single Wand can grant its wielder near-omnipotence, so it’s reasonable to assume that the use of all six in tangent could allow someone to re-write the laws of reality itself. The combined power of the complete set of Wands was so dangerous that Watoomb scattered them across the multiverse to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.
Dr. Doom has never been one to allow anyone or anything to set boundaries on his ambitions, and his extensive skills with the arcane would give him a good chance of overcoming any mystical obstacle standing between him and the wands. Making matters worse, Kushala reveals to Olivia that Dr. Doom has already acquired five of the wands. Kushala further explains that Dr. Doom plans to use the Wands to seize control of fate, which would give him complete control over every sentient creature in the universe. Considering his extensive knowledge of magic and his impressive willpower, there’s no doubt that Dr. Doom is capable of wielding the Wands to achieve this goal.
At the moment, the only ones standing between Dr. Doom and the last Wand are Olivia and Kushala, and although the Spirit Rider was powerful enough to claim the title of Sorcerer Supreme during her lifetime, Doom has held his own against her contemporary counterpart multiple times. If Olivia wants to save her daughter and the world, she will have to face the full might of a man who plans to become a god.
