Jungle Cruise has proven to be a surprise hit for Disney, and the company is already preparing a return voyage into the jungle.
A second Jungle Cruise is already in the works, with many of the original film’s cast and crew set to return.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has already begun work on a sequel to this summer’s Jungle Cruise, which was released in late July and has become of the highest grossing movies of the year. Stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are set to reprise their roles. Michael Green, who co-wrote the original movie, will also write the sequel. Jaume Collet-Serra will return to direct.
Jungle Cruise has so far earned over $100 million USD at the domestic box office and $187 million worldwide, as well as an additional $30 million from its paid Disney+ streaming release. The film has maintained a steady influx of viewers in its five weeks in theaters, which has helped it to grow to be one of the bigger hits from this summer season, which is still seeing box office returns reeling from theater closures and pandemic restrictions.
The original movie, which is based on the Disneyland ride of the same name, was in development for over 15 years before it was finally released.
