Danny DeVito is joining the cast of Disney’s Haunted Mansion film, which started filming last week.
Danny DeVito is paying a visit to The Haunted Mansion.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DeVito will play a smug professor in the upcoming Disney comedy based on the ride of the same name. He joins already announced cast members LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson. Plot details are under wraps, but the film will follow a mother and son as they learn that their New Orleans mansion is haunted by ghosts.
Stanfield will play a New Orleans tour guide who used to believe in the supernatural, while Haddish’s part is a psychic the family hires to communicate with the ghosts. Wilson and Dawson’s roles remains shrouded in mystery. Production began in early October in New Orleans and Atlanta.
Dear White People creator, writer and director Justin Simien will helm the film, while Katie Dippold will pen the script. The House of Mouse has wanted to work with Simien for a long time now and will continue that relationship beyond The Haunted Mansion, as the director has also signed on to be the showrunner of the Lando Calrissian Disney+ Star Wars series.
The Haunted Mansion first opened in Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California in 1969. (At the time, it was known as Disneyland Park.) The family-friendly horror ride takes guests through the mansion in small carts and utilizes theatrical and special effects for scares. Other versions of the ride opened in Magic Kingdom in 1971, Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, Disneyland Park (Paris) in 1992 and Hong Kong Disneyland in 2013. The ride has been updated at various points throughout the decades, including a crossover with The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Haunted Mansion was previously adapted into a film starring Eddie Murphy in 2003. Directed by Rob Minkoff and written by David Berenbaum, the movie received overall negative reviews and grossed $180 million off a $90 million budget.
Disney is well-known for turning its theme park rides and attractions into movies. Its most successful effort came from The Pirates of the Caribbean, which has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. Other, less successful adaptations include Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland and Tower of Terror. The latter is being turned into a new movie starring Scarlett Johansson.
