Disney’s free FastPass system will be replaced by a new paid system called Genie+ that will allow parkgoers access to ‘Lightning Lanes’ to avoid waits
Walt Disney Parks will be discontinuing its free FastPass program that allows visitors at the park to skip the wait on a select group of rides each day and replacing it with a new paid service that will allow visitors to do the same for an additional $15 per ticket per day at Disney World and $20 at Disneyland.
This new “Lighting Lane” option will be part of a new Disney Genie+ service that Disney is launching to go along with a free trip-planning service called simply Disney Genie.
Disney promoted the announcement of Disney Genie as, “Built right into the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps, Disney Genie service will maximize your park time, so you can have more fun. It includes a personalized itinerary feature that will quickly and seamlessly map out an entire day. From specific attractions, foodie experiences and entertainment, to general interests like Disney princesses, villains, Pixar, Star Wars, thrill rides and more – just tell Disney Genie what you want to do and it will do the planning for you.”
As part of this trip planning will be aforementioned paid Genie+ service, which will give visitors access to “Lightning Lanes,” allowing visitors to avoid the regular standby line and go to the “Lightning Lane” point in line. Genie+ also includes, “Disney parks-themed audio experiences and photo features to capture your memories – augmented reality lenses for those visiting Walt Disney World Resort and unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads from your day if you are visiting Disneyland Resort.”
In addition, visitors will also be able to pay an additional fee to schedule specific visit times for certain rides at the Lightning Lane entrance. The pricing on that will “vary by date, attraction and park.”
The FastPass system debuted in 1999 and has become a very popular feature for visitors at the Disney Parks. However, Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro told CNN that Genie will be an improvement for visitors, “We’ve had 60 years of experience in theme parks. So we know exactly how people are behaving, how the attractions are behaving. We know exactly how to optimize a day. So with technology advancing, we’re able to take all that information and all of that data that our industrial engineers have and serve it up in a very convenient way to our guests.”
FastPass has been temporarily halted due to COVID anyways, so the introduction of Disney Genie will not technically replace FastPass, as there is no FastPass right now.
