Disney, Netflix, Others Vow to Provide Abortion Travel Expenses for Employees

[ad_1]

Immediately upon the announcement of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, a host of companies have said they will cover the cost for employees who need to travel out of state for abortions.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday officially reversed Roe v. Wade, declaring that the constitutional right to abortion upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists and must be decided by the individual states. Abortion services are now effectively without any federal protection, and the states are now responsible for codifying their own laws surrounding abortion. Some many already passed laws banning nearly all abortions.

A number of top studios and entertainment giants — including Comcast, Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Warner Bros Discovery — vowed to pay travel expenses for employees looking to get abortions.

The decision triggered a raft of statements among some of the biggest left-wing companies in the U.S. including:

  • Disney
  • Paramount
  • Netflix
  • Condé Nast
  • Meta / Facebook
  • Warner Bros / Discovery
  • Comcast
  • Sony
  • Intuit
  • BuzzFeed
  • Duolingo
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • Patagonia
  • Box
  • Johnson & Johnson

Paramount CEO Bob Bakish sent an email to reassure staffers that they’ll be covered if they need to travel for their abortion procedure, saying “across the country, we have entered a moment of profound uncertainty. In the face of this uncertainty, we want to be very clear about what will not change at Paramount.” He then highlighted Paramount’s health policies, including the coverage of travel-related expenses “if the covered health service, such as abortion, is prohibited in your area.”

Warner Bros Discovery told employees that the studio is “immediately expanding our healthcare benefits options to include expenses for employees and their covered family members who need to travel to access a range of medical procedures, including care for abortions, family planning and reproductive health.”

These companies join a previous wave of corporations that had made similar announcements after a Supreme Court opinion leaked in early May suggesting this outcome. Those companies include:

  • Amazon Prime
  • Zillow
  • Levi Strauss
  • Apple
  • Lyft
  • Uber
  • Airbnb
  • DoorDash
  • Yelp
  • Citigroup
  • Tesla
  • Microsoft
  • Starbucks
  • Mastercard
  • Reddit
  • PayPal
