For the first time since they started their streaming service, Disney has released what they claim is an actual dollar amount for one of their premiere access films.
According to Deadline, the studio is touting a big haul for Black Widow as they put together the $80M domestic box office, $78M from the international markets and another $60M from Disney+ Premiere Access bringing the weekend total to $215M. Though the domestic box office is far lower than the industry expectations, the combined amount qualifies the movie as the highest grossing domestic film since Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker back in December 2019. By combining that box office total with the Disney+ total makes Black Widow the only film to surpass the $100M domestic mark since the pandemic began. It also makes it a top 5 opening weekend highest grossing MCU film after Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, The Avengers, and Black Panther ($202M), and making it the second highest opening for a solo story film, edging out Captain Marvel ($153.4M).
So why do I find this so hard to accept? Would Disney lie to us just to create more hype?
Now, if you’ve seen the film and stayed through the end-credit scene, then you know we could follow someone who is not Scarlett Johansson and there are a few options. But as for a film with the original Black Widow, there is a small window of time from when she has finished her mission and her family leaves to where we see her basically right before Infinity War where there seems to be a time jump. Like the potential for them to squeeze in one more adventure if they really wanted to. I think it come down to how well the film does and whether Marvel wants to do another film with Natasha or if it’s time to let Florence Pugh take over.
