Chapter 6 of The Book of Boba Fett contained many reveals but its most powerful weapon may have created a major Star Wars plot hole.
WARNING: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” streaming now on Disney+.
Chapter 6 of The Book of Boba Fett contained numerous surprises that left fans shocked and excited. Although the returning characters have taken the spotlight, one of the biggest reveals that viewers should have paid attention to was the return of an important Star Wars artifact. However, this powerful weapon’s appearance may have created a major plot hole.
At the very end of the episode, Luke Skywalker pulled out two gifts for Grogu. One was a small chainmail Beskar armor, gifted to him by the Mandalorian. The other was the weapon of a Jedi master from his own species – Yoda’s lightsaber. This reveal was akin to the reveal of Luke Skywalker’s old lightsaber in The Force Awakens. Not just because it’s the lightsaber of a fan-favorite character but also because its appearance in the show makes no sense.
Hardcore Star Wars fans will know exactly what happened to Yoda’s lightsaber. It was last seen in Revenge of the Sith, during the Jedi master’s battle with Darth Sidious. During the course of that duel, Yoda dropped his lightsaber and was unable to retrieve it before escaping the Senate chambers with Bail Organa. Palpatine’s clones found it and so it fell into the hands of the Empire. Anyone who has only watched the movies and the Disney+ shows could surmise that Luke recovered the lightsaber after the fall of the Empire. There’s just one problem with that.
It was destroyed. Yes, Yoda’s lightsaber, along with many others, was destroyed in the early days of the Empire. The lightsabers of all the slain Jedi were collected and burned for all the citizens of Coruscant to see. It created quite the explosive spectacle too. This was shown in 2017’s Darth Vader #1 (by Charles Soule, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cam Smith, Joe Caramagna and David Curiel). Yoda’s lightsaber specifically was highlighted just before it was thrown onto the pyre and burned to ashes. Vader himself noted that his master could have given him Yoda’s saber, to form his own Sith lightsaber, but chose to destroy it.
So, if Yoda’s lightsaber was destroyed in one of the Empire’s many Jedi-related purges, then how can Luke have it? This issue has popped up before, in one of the numerous Star Wars reference books. 2016’s Star Wars: Complete Locations, a visual guide to some of the franchise’s most iconic locations, showed Yoda’s lightsaber stored away in his hut on Dagobah. When asked about how this book conflicted with the events of Darth Vader #1, the comic’s writer, Charles Soule, theorized that the Jedi Master could have constructed another or that Sidious created a fake. It’s unlikely that the latter theory is true, given how Yoda was forced to abandon the lightsaber after his duel with the Sith Lord.
This plot hole drew the attention of Lucasfilm Story Group’s Matt Martin, who stated that there was no error and that Yoda likely built a number of lightsabers during his lifetime. But then why does the one that the Empire destroyed look identical to the one that Luke has in The Book of Boba Fett?
The answer lies in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Jedi had a droid, Huyang, that helped them build their lightsabers. First appearing in season 5 episode 7 “A Test of Strength,” this droid contained schematics for every lightsaber created during its lifetime, which was over 1000 years old, so older than Yoda. Therefore, Yoda could have easily created an exact duplicate of his weapon at any time with Huyang’s help. It’s very plausible he had multiple too, as Palpatine hid a number of lightsabers around his office.
The Book of Boba Fett‘s lightsaber reveal isn’t a total plot hole then. Luke could have collected Yoda’s Dagobah duplicate. However, it begs the question, how many more of Yoda’s lightsabers could be scattered across the galaxy?
