Charles Xavier and Mystique’s son was a terrifying villain, although there is nothing stopping him from making a triumphant return in the near future.
The X-Men are no strangers to the infinite wonders and horrors of Marvel’s Multiverse. Over the years, the world’s foremost mutant heroes have faced off against countless iterations of themselves as well as their heirs from across various timelines. While some time-displaced mutants like Cable spent years grappling with their places in the universe, others have never dealt with any inner turmoil.
In the case of Charles Xavier II, he has always known exactly who he was. Unfortunately, the role he embraced just so happened to be one of the future’s most dangerous villains.
First introduced in 2013’s X-Men: Battle of the Atom #1 by Brian Michael Bendis, Frank Cho, and Stuart Immonen, the Charles Xavier of the future returned to the then present alongside his fellow X-Men in the hopes of staving off a grim catastrophe. If the original five time-displaced X-Men did not return to their proper place in time after Beast plucked them from the past, disaster would follow. This winding, convoluted series of time traveling teams convening in the primary X-Men’s time just shortly after the death of Professor Xavier was no coincidence, as it was Xavier’s demise that had created a violent schism between the team decades later. The arrival of yet another team of X-Men, this one from the same future as Xavier’s son, revealed that Charles Xavier II’s dream was nothing like his father’s.
It isn’t all that surprising that his vision of a better world was so far removed from his father’s, as Charles Xavier II never really knew either of his parents. Conceived while his mother Mystique impersonated Xavier’s former lover Moira MacTaggert, neither parent accepted responsibility for Xavier II. When his powers finally emerged, the young mutant accidentally killed his adopted mother, leaving him alone. Though he would eventually track down Mystique, she was long dead, killed by Raze, the son of Raven and Wolverine. He assumed their mother’s place after her demise. Despite such violent beginnings, the two sort of half-brothers shared the opinion that the X-Men had disgraced the original Xavier’s legacy. In response, the duo opted to form their own Brotherhood of Mutants.
Xavier II launched numerous attacks against the X-Men of the present over nearly two years, all of his efforts only leading him to S.H.I.E.L.D. imprisonment. From prison, Xavier II supplied his future self with notes on his defeats, repeatedly changing his and the Brotherhood’s actions. Of course, his appearances across the timeline also set the stage for anyone willing to intervene before Charles II’s emerging powers sent him down a dark path.
Charles Xavier II’s tragic story may have twisted his resolve against his father’s legacy, though there is still the chance that he could become something more significant than the villain he has been. Considering it was his anger over the desecration of his father’s dream that drove him to violence, readers can hope that some version of him will realize just how far from that same dream he has strayed. That is, assuming he gets the chance to make a comeback from the relative obscurity he has fallen into in the first place.
