With Destiny 2’s next highly anticipated expansion coming soon, let’s break down the story so far and how it may affect The Witch Queen.
The newest expansion for Destiny 2, The Witch Queen, is right on the horizon. On Feb. 22, players will get the chance to dive into the Throne World of Savathûn and take on the Hive god. This expansion represents a new chapter for the world of Destiny. Savathûn has gained control of the Light, and for the first time, players will have to fight Hive warriors that possess the same powers as Guardians.
Savathûn is a villain that has been developing for years now, all the way back since the beginning of Destiny 2. The story surrounding her, and the ambitions of the Hive, are dense and can be complicated at times. The lore of Destiny is rich and has been accumulating for quite some time. Here are the major story points that you need to know to get ready for The Witch Queen.
Who Is Savathûn, The Witch Queen?
Savathûn is one of the three main gods of the Hive. Like her siblings, Xivu Arath, God of War and Oryx, the Taken King, she gained her immense power through a pact with the primordial Worm Gods. Unlike her siblings, who are motivated by eternal conquest and endless war, Savathûn is driven to understand the secrets of the universe. She prefers to use deception, manipulation, and confusion to achieve her goals, which makes her uniquely dangerous.
While the other gods and powerful warlords of the Hive have directly challenged the Guardians, Savathûn has been pulling strings in the background. Savathûn cooperated with the last Wish-Dragon, Riven, to manipulate Uldren Sov into cursing the Dreaming City. She also repeatedly attempted to prevent the Guardians from communicating with the Darkness.
For a considerable amount of time, Savathûn had been impersonating Osiris, a former Vanguard Commander of the Last City. This deception was revealed at the beginning of the Season of the Lost. At every turn, Savathûn has always remained one step ahead of her enemies. Every supposed “defeat” she has experienced has just been another successful step in her long-term plans.
The Story of Season of the Lost
Savathûn turned against her sister, Xivu Arath, and the Worm gods of the Hive. To hide from them, Savathûn kidnapped Osiris and disguised herself as him. When the ruse was revealed, Mara Sov, the Awoken Queen, trapped her in a large crystal. Savathûn struck a bargain with Mara to release Osiris in exchange for purging the worm parasite inside her and stopping Xivu Arath’s expansion.
Mara agreed to the bargain and requested that the Guardian free her Techun Coven from the Ascendant Realm to assist her. With the Techuns’ help, Mara will be able to excise the worm inside of Savathûn and halt Xivu Arath’s corruption. Mara believes that without the worm, she will be able to strike down Savathûn since she won’t be able to retreat to her Throne World. Considering that players will be fighting Savathûn in her Throne World, it’s safe to say that the plan won’t succeed.
Throughout the Season of the Lost, Savathûn has had multiple conversations with the player. She has repeatedly asserted that she is actually an ally of the Guardian and has only tried to help them. She has also attempted to talk with Crow, the resurrected Uldren Sov, stating that she was honest with him while disguised as Osiris. As always, Savathûn continues to spread her lies and deceit in order to gain the upper hand.
Where Does Destiny 2’s Story Go From Here?
The ultimate fate of the real Osiris will likely be revealed at the end of Season of the Lost. Whether or not Savathûn will keep her word is yet to be seen. Savathûn has always ensured that her true intentions are obscured and impossible to understand. It’s hard to say what Savathûn’s goals are in The Witch Queen, but her plans are already coming together.
It’s been revealed that while Savathûn was pretending to be Osiris, she had Crow collect dead Ghosts. While the exact purpose of this hasn’t been unveiled yet, it’s likely connected to her control over the Light. The Witch Queen‘s trailer shows strange Hive-like Ghosts alongside the Light-wielding Hive, leading some to speculate that Savathûn has repurposed the dead Ghosts that Crow gathered for her. Hopefully, all of these mysteries will be answered with the release of the new expansion.
