Demon Slayer: 10 Harsh Realities Of Being A Hashira

[ad_1]

Everyone who has seen the Demon Slayer anime or read the manga can attest to how cool the Hashira are. However, with such amazing power and lofty titles come some hefty prices to their freedom, safety, and lifestyle.

While the job may look awesome, it’s worth stopping to think about the sacrifices the Hashira make to be the ultimate Demon Slayers.

10 It Can Be A Lifetime Gig

While viewers do meet a lot of retired Hashira, such as Tanjiro’s master Urokodaki and Zenitsu’s master Jigoro, it’s very clear that their responsibilities as Demon Slayers have not disappeared. As well as training the next generation of Demon Slayers, they also still have to show solid mastery of the breathing techniques and sword forms, as well as put them into action to protect others.

Most might not even make it to retirement, as it’s implied that countless Demon Slayers will die in service, from starting service at a young age up until they meet their demise. The role will take all of their lifespan up until the time where Hashira can’t wield a blade any longer.

9 The Training Has To Be Rigorous

Viewers have seen the level of mastery one needs to be an unstoppable Demon Slayer. Maintaining the constant breathing techniques and mastering all of the sword forms of their chosen form takes years—if not decades—of dedication and practice.

Especially to maintain the reputation of a strong enough Demon Slayer and earn the mantle of Hashira, one would need to constantly show development and cement themselves as the best of the best. If they’re not willing to train day in, day out then they’re not going to cut it as a Hashira.

8 Not Exactly A Stable Job With A Standard Paycheck

While it’s known that Demon Slayers are paid some form of salary, it’s supposedly not very much. Hashira probably don’t need a lot of money when they’re always on the road, moving from target to target, but it means any money they do get is only going to support their next journey and supply the minimum amount of comfort needed.

It’s not like they’d get it through a standard paycheck either, with most communication to their employer being through the use of magical messenger birds. It’s hardly the standard way to receive a wage or communicate with management. Being a Hashira, or Demon Slayer in general, is not a job one goes into for the money.

7 Free Time & Personal Space Must Be Sacrificed

Viewers have already seen how little free space and personal time the Demon Slayers get through Tanjiro dealing with Zenitsu and Inosuke, as well as the bird messengers hammering him with new objectives. Imagine how relentless and time-consuming it must be for the best of the best.

The Hashira would be moving from job to job more than any of the other Demon Slayers, as Hashira are in desperately high demand. This means barely any time to catch a breath or relax, they’ve always got to be ready to go and always willing to be thrown into the thick of it.

6 Their Employer Is Shrouded In Mystery

Master Kagaya and his attendants are a very mysterious bunch, and they’re not ones to spell out their intentions directly. It would be very infuriating for anyone to have to deal with an employer who only conveys vague targets for their upcoming job and doesn’t give much context on the organization as a whole.

Luckily, most who qualify as Hashira have noble hearts which are more focused on wiping out the demon threat, rather than inquiring into the master’s affairs. However, it doesn’t help to be in a role where the management is not overly cooperative or straightforward.

5 A Tragic Backstory May Be Required

As expected of shonen anime, every great hero needs to have a tragic backstory that fuels their ambition to save the day and be the best. This is no exception in Demon Slayer, as viewers have already met a lot of characters who have had some dire events in their life that either lead them down the path of becoming Demon Slayers or encouraged them to continue down the path.

In the case of Hashira in the anime, viewers have already learned from Shinobu the tragic case of what happened to her older sister, and Kyojuro’s stories about his father and rising to take his place as the Flame Hashira isn’t a barrel of laughs either. It looks like having a tragedy in your past is just another hidden part of the job description.

4 Colleagues Can Be Difficult To Work With

Not all of the Hashira are thorough-bred professionals. Some of them are ruthless, live for the thrill of the fight, or have a bone to pick with everyone. Viewers have met quite a few Hashira who meet this description in the anime already, especially Sanemi when he decided to judge Tanjiro and Nezuko’s fate all by himself.

Sadly, Hashira don’t get to pick their colleagues, similarly to many jobs in real life. But Hashira also have to depend on these people to hold their values and be willing to stick their neck out as much as any other Hashira. It might not always be a comforting thought to know that these are the people who are supposed to have their back.

3 Everyone Looks Up To The Hashira As Role Models

Naturally, when you’re the best in the business, it means people are going to look up to you, show you huge respect, and wish to learn from you. While it might be a nice feeling to be held so highly, there is also the pressure of meeting their expectations and holding the fighting spirit of the Demon Slayers on your shoulders.

It’s easy to imagine how exhausting it would be to maintain a Hashira’s poise and heroism around all of your colleagues. Not only do Hashira have to keep up that shining reputation, but Hashira probably don’t want to let anyone down either. Choosing who to guide and who to abandon is a hard choice to make, but one a Hashira always has to be ready to make.

2 Injuries Are Bound To Happen, Especially With That Target On Their Back

When you’re fighting fairly regularly, it’s to be expected that you will gain injuries quite frequently. However, when your opponents have such unbelievable strength, injuries usually end up being severe or even life-threatening.

As a Hashira, they’ll be fighting more than the standard Demon Slayer, and while they should have the training and technique to back them up, Hashira still run a higher risk of getting dangerously hurt. This is only made worse by the fact that being a Hashira means that some very strong demons will be looking for them, so they can put an end to their meddling or feel the thrill of fighting an opponent as strong as they are.

1 Death Is A Very Possible Workplace Hazard

As viewers have seen frequently in both the anime and the manga, death is a very real threat facing all Demon Slayers in their line of work. This is definitely likely for a Hashira, as not only do they have to fight stronger opponents, but they are the biggest targets for Muzan and his legions of followers.

Viewers have seen this fate most recently hit Kyojuro in the Mugen Train movie, showing just how possible it is for even the greatest of Demon Slayers to meet their end at the hands of powerful demons. The job of Hashira requires an iron will and the ability to stare death in the face countless times. It is certainly not for the faint of heart.
