Demon Slayer: 10 Darkest Points In The Story, Ranked

[ad_1]

Within the very first episode of the anime, it becomes very clear that Demon Slayer is not going to shy away from the darker aspects of storytelling. While there are plenty of cute moments and funny interactions between the heroes, the overall theme of the show is one of brutal violence and sadistic monsters who take the greatest pleasure in killing innocent humans.

Throughout the series, not only are the lives of the Demon Slayers often cut brutally short in their war against the progeny of Muzan Kibutsuji, but the demons themselves are often tragic and sympathetic creatures corrupted by the blood of the first demon. The story does not shy away from showing just how cruel a world inhabited by demons can be, fuelling the drive for the Demon Slayers to put an end to Muzan’s terrible lineage.

10 The Kamado Family Tragedy Began Tanjiro’s Dark Journey

Tanjiro's mother and siblings, the Kamado family

Fans of anime are accustomed to tragic origin stories for the protagonists, so when the first episode begins with a look into the almost painfully saccharine dynamics of the Kamado family, it is only natural to expect the worst.

That certainly comes to pass, as the young Tanjiro returns from his journey down the mountain only to discover his entire family slaughtered by a demon, including his mother and all his younger siblings. Only his sister Nezuko survives, and only because she has been infected with the blood of a demon. As far as heroic origin stories go, this is one of the darker ones.

9 The Disappearing Girls Were The Work Of A Cruel Demon

Tanjiro’s first mission after becoming a Demon Slayer is to investigate the disappearance of several young women in a remote northern town. There, he discovers that the latest disappearance has been blamed on a young man whose fiancée vanished while they were out walking together. Tanjiro is quick to sniff out the true culprit, the Swamp Demon, and with his sister Nezuko, he fights a fierce battle to defeat it. Soon they discover just how twisted this creature is, killing young women and collecting their hair ornaments as trophies, of which there are several, indicating it has been committing these murders for some time before the heroes arrive.

8 The Massacre of Natagumo Mountain Was A Tragedy For The Demon Slayers

As Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke are sent on their first mission together to Natagumo Mountain, they discover the horrific fate that has befallen their Demon Slayer colleagues. Countless swordsmen and swordswomen ventured up the mountain, only to be mercilessly toyed with and slaughtered by the cruel Spider Family, lead by the demon Rui. Many of them are transformed by the Spider Son’s poison, and others are turned into puppets by the Spider Mother, forced to fight their own allies before being brutally killed by her webs.

7 The Spider Mother Was An Unfortunate Victim Of Her Twisted Family

Though almost all demons have committed horrific acts of murder and mayhem, many are also pitiful creatures, corrupted by the blood of Muzan to become monsters. The Spider Mother is one such creature, once a young woman turned demon, then manipulated and painfully transformed by Lower Rank Five Rui to become the maternal figure of his twisted “family.” Though she too is a demon capable of committing terrible acts, the abuse she suffers at the hands of Rui and the Spider Father adds to her tragic story, leading to her to accept the killing blow of Tanjiro without protest.

6 Rui Was Once A Boy Who Wanted His Family Back

Young Rui from Demon Slayer before he was a demon

Throughout the Natagumo Mountain Arc, it is shown just how cruel and evil Rui, the true power behind the Spider Family, really is. Thus, his death at the hands of Water Hashira Giyu will elicit few tears from fans of the series.

That is until the final moments of the demon’s life, where fans catch a glimpse of just how sad his story is. As with all demons, Rui had once been a human child, corrupted by Muzan Kibutsuji and ultimately slaughtering his own parents. His creation of the Spider Family was an attempt to recreate the life he once had, and though his horrible acts cannot be undone, his story does evoke some level of sympathy for the boy he once was.

5 Kanao’s Coldness Was Due To Her Troubled Past

Kanao smiles in front of wisteria

Kanao Tsuyuri is a high-ranking member of the Demon Slayer Corps, despite her young age. When Tanjiro and the others first meet her, she seems cold and emotionless, and they later learn is due to her upbringing, where she suffered through terrible abuse. In addition, she also lost her older adoptive sister, Kanae, to a demon, showing that Tanjiro does not have a monopoly on having a tragic backstory. It is only after meeting Tanjiro that the young Demon Slayer begins to open up.

4 The Culling of the Lower Ranks Demonstrated Muzan’s Cruelty

To say that Muzan Kibutsuji is the epitome of a cruel, sadistic monster would be a significant understatement. The depths of his thirst for violence and unmitigated hatred for humanity are clear from the very start, but the progenitor of all demons does not look kindly upon his own kind either, even those within his inner circle.

After the death of Rui, all of the lower rank demons are summoned to the Infinity Castle, where they encounter the transformed Muzan, who berates them for their weakness, making them all cower before him. When his authority is questioned by one of the groveling demons, Muzan demonstrates that he is capable of reading their minds, and this begins a bloodbath as he slaughters each one of the Lower Rank demons in brutal manners. The only survivor is Enmu, and only because he willingly submits himself to the power of Muzan is he allowed to live.

3 Tanjiro Was Forced To Say Goodbye To His Family A Second Time

Mugen Train FIlm _ Tanjiro's Dream State _ Kamado Siblings

While aboard the Mugen Train, the Demon Slayers are put into a deep sleep by the Blood Arts of Enmu, who pacifies them with peaceful dreams while he enacts his ultimate plan. For Tanjiro, this means that, for a time, he is reunited with his family, who had all been slain by Muzan some time ago. Yet Tanjiro would not succumb to this temptation, and despite his family begging him to stay with them, the young Demon Slayer realizes this was all just a dream brought upon by a demon. Forced the cut his own neck in order to escape the dream, Tanjiro must leave his family behind in order to fulfill his duty.

2 Kyojuro’s Sacrifice Showed The Heroes That Even Hashira Can Die

The Mugen Train Arc is one where the protagonists truly put their skills and teamwork to the test. After proving their mettle by defeating Lower Rank One Enmu, it seems as though they have successfully accomplished their mission and saved the passengers of the runaway train.

Their success is short-lived, however, as their victory is interrupted by the arrival of a powerful demon, Upper Rank Three Akaza. What ensues is a spectacular battle between the demon and the Flame Hashira Kyojuro, who is determined to prevent a single soul from dying under his which. The two battled to the very break of dawn, only for the desperate demon to thrust his fist right through the Hashira, mortally wounding him before escaping. Tanjiro and his friends break down in tears as the kindly Hashira dies with a smile on his face, his mission ultimately successful.

1 The Fate of Sabito and Makomo Was A Harsh Lesson For Tanjiro

Sabito and Makomo

During Tanjiro’s training with the former Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki, he meets two very strange youngsters, Sabito and Makomo, who were also apprentices of the former Demon Slayer. Though he does not realize it at the time, these are only their spirits, as both of them were killed during the Final Selection years past. Tanjiro learns this when he encounters the horrific Hand Demon, who had been captured decades ago by Sakonji to be used as a test for young Demon Slayers, and the demon has been hunting and slaughtering the former Hashira’s apprentices ever since, including both Sabito and Makomo. Revenge is finally had when Tanjiro unleashes his Water Breathing technique, beheading the demon and avenging all those it had slain.
