Nightmare Alley director Guillermo del Toro reveals more information about his scrapped Justice League Dark film, explaining how he used John Constantine and Etrigan the Demon.

Guillermo del Toro opened up about his Justice League Dark movie in a recent interview, confirming just who would have made up the team.

Talking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, del Toro addressed the Justice League Dark movie. He explained how he took different elements of the characters and combined them into a single movie. “I took a little bit of the opening of the Alan Moore Constantine,” del Toro said. “And I took the dynamics of [Abby Arcane] and Swamp Thing, and I took the sort of revelatory moments when Deadman gets into a body, how he would experience the consciousness of that being. And one of my all time’s famous is demon, Etrigan. I love that character.” He then noted Zatanna would have also worked with the team and indicated that Klarion the Witch Boy would have played a role in the film.

In 2013, del Toro officially confirmed that he was working on a Justice League Dark film, and he even finished a script for the movie. However, in 2015, reports surfaced del Toro was no longer directing the project. Later, directer Doug Liman boarded the project, with del Toro billed as producing, but that film never came to fruition.

Created by Peter Milligan, the Justice League Dark first appeared in an eponymous series in 2011 as part of DC’s New 52 reboot. The team’s members have included Madame Xanadu, John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman and several other high-profile magical DC characters. There have been several attempts to adapt the team for live-action. Most recently, Warner Media and J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot production company announced they were working on a Justice League Dark TV series. However, there have not been any significant updates regarding that project since its announcement in 2020.

The DCEU began in 2013 with Man of Steel, which was directed by Zack Snyder from a script by David S. Goyer. However, following the theatrical failure of 2017’s Justice League and the successes of 2017’s Wonder Woman and 2018’s Aquaman, Warner Bros. began taking its shared movie universe in a new direction.

Black Adam is the next DCEU film set to release. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular character. The film will also introduce the Justice Society of America, which includes such characters as Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan).

Del Toro’s latest movie, Nightmare Alley, is in theaters now. His next film will be Pinocchio, which releases on Netflix in 2022.
