‘Death on the Nile’ Debuts at #1 at the Weekend Box Office
While studios expected this weekend to be lighter at the box office because of the Super Bowl, they compensated by releasing films they though would bring in more female viewers, who are more likely to go to the theater during the big game then men are. This worked out very well for the much-delayed Kenneth Branagh lead Death on the Nile. The actor/director was joined by Gal Gadot, Annette Bening, Letitia Wright, Emma Mackey, Armie Hammer and Russel Brand.
The film adaption of the Agatha Christie novel had a decent opening weekend, bringing in $12.8M and an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics weren’t as excited, but the film is still considered fresh with a 66%, higher than its previous film Murder on the Orient Express.
In second place is Jackass Forever with a nice $8.05 million and then third is the debut of Marry Me at $8 million. The Jennifer Lopez/Owen Wilson rom-com opened in theaters and was available on Peacock prime at the same time which may have hurt it’s initial box office draw. Spider-Man: No Way Home kept swinging and clung onto the fourth spot with another $7.15 million while Blacklight debuted to only $3.6 million its first weekend. The Roland Emmerich film Moonfall continues to disappoint with only $2.85 million in its second week.
