Death Note is considered by many to be one of the best anime and manga series of all time. It told the story of a boy named Light Yagami who, after obtaining the titular notebook, used the Death Note to rid the world of its criminals under the name of Kira, causing the greatest detective in the world, L, to try to find him.
By the end of the manga, Light had many opponents, with his greatest being Near, who finally managed to prove that he was Kira. However, there are many things that Light could have done to beat Near.
10 If He Didn’t Kill A Local Criminal, L Wouldn’t Have Suspected Where Light Was
When Light first found the Death Note, he contemplated on whether or not to use it. Knowing that if he were to do so, it would have to be on someone he considered to be bad, he watched the news and discovered a killer named Kurou Otoharada. Though writing his name into the Death Note proved that it was real, it also gave L a reason to believe that Kira was in Kanto, a region in Japan, as this was the first time a criminal died of a heart attack at around the time Kira began killing them.
9 Killing Lind L. Tailor Only Confirmed L’s Suspicions
Another huge mistake that Light made early on was killing Lind L. Tailor. To confirm his beliefs, L used a criminal named Lind L. Tailor to pretend to be him as he challenged Kira on live TV. Because Light thought that the whole world was watching the broadcast, he quickly murdered the fake L, only for the real one to reveal that the broadcast only aired in Kanto. If Light had denied L’s challenge, his identity may have never been discovered.
8 Light Made Himself Look More Guilty By Killing The FBI Agents
The last major mistake that Light made at the beginning of the series when it came to the people he killed was murdering the FBI agents that went to Japan. Once he found out that one of them, Raye Penber, was spying on him, he used him to kill the other agents before making him commit suicide. Because Raye had no reason to believe that Light was Kira, killing him quickly only made Light look more guilty, resulting in L being more suspicious of him.
7 If Ryuk Loved Light, He Could Have Killed Near And Mello For Him
One of Light’s biggest threats besides those who wanted to catch him was Rem, a Shinigami that threatened to kill him if he hurt the human she loved, Misa. If she were to do so, she would die, as Shinigami cannot kill people in order to save a human they love.
While Rem ended up sacrificing herself to kill L and Watari, Ryuk could have done the same later on to Mello and Near if he wanted to. However, since he never had any feelings for Light and only saw the humans’ conflict as a form of entertainment, Ryuk allowed Light to be beaten and even wrote his name into the Death Note.
6 Soichiro Could Have Killed Mello Earlier
Another character who could have killed Mello was Soichiro. After obtaining the Shinigami Eyes and coming face to face with Mello, Soichiro could have written his name in the notebook. However, he refused to do so at first and died shortly after as Light begged him to end Mello’s life. As a result of not killing him, Mello was then able to live long enough to help Near prove that Light was Kira.
5 Near Confirmed That Light, L, And Kira Were The Same Person Through Aizawa
At one point, Light gave up ownership of the Death Note and lost his memories of being Kira so he could prove to L that he was innocent. Because L was so certain that Light was Kira as well as Misa being the Second Kira, he had Soichiro pretend that he would kill him. Light didn’t do anything to stop his father, who had threatened to commit suicide and die with his son. Luckily, Light was able to be seen as innocent for a while, but this would eventually be used against him. Years later, Aizawa told Near about the interaction between Light and Soichiro. Due to Soichiro’s threat, Near found out that Light, L, and Kira were all the same person.
4 Light Could Have Chosen Someone Besides Mikami To Become Kira
Mikami helped Light a lot towards the end of the series, taking over as Kira when Light wasn’t able to. However, he was also partially responsible for Near proving that Light was guilty of being Kira the whole time. If Light had chosen to have someone else take his place as Kira, it’s possible that they wouldn’t have made the same mistakes that Mikami made, allowing Light to beat Near and his other enemies, becoming the God of the New World.
3 Mikami Wouldn’t Have Used The Death Note If Mello Didn’t Kidnap Kiyomi
When Mello kidnapped Kiyomi, Mikami, who thought that Light didn’t have access to the Death Note at all, used his to kill her. At the time, Gevanni was watching him and found his notebook. He was able to make a fake copy and gave Near the real one.
Shortly after, the Task Force and SPK met in person. With all of Light’s enemies surrounding him, he had Mikami join them and write their names down. However, they didn’t die and discovered that Light’s name was the only one that wasn’t written down. Because of Mello, Near was able to finish what L started.
2 If Light Was Able To Convince The Task Force And SPK That He Was Justice, They May Have Backed Down
In the second half of the series, the Task Force’s perspective of Kira was challenged multiple times. While Matsuda always understood that Kira’s existence decreased crime rates and had a difficult time seeing him solely as evil, the others felt like it was necessary to catch him at all costs. However, they eventually worked with him to take down the mafia and had multiple conversations about whether they were doing the right thing. When they confirmed that Light was Kira, he tried to persuade them one last time into believing that he was justice but failed. If he had used the times when he worked with them as Kira to help convince them that he was righteous, their minds may have changed.
1 Ryuk Could Have Simply Not Written Light’s Name In The Death Note
After the SPK and Task Force caught Kira, Ryuk decided that it was finally time to write his name into the Death Note. While Ryuk killed Light after he escaped from his enemies in the anime, he begged the Shinigami to kill them in the manga. Rather than being killed, Light was only going to be arrested by the Task Force, so if Ryuk hadn’t written his name down, Light wouldn’t have died. However, Ryuk didn’t want to wait years while Light was in prison, and decided to end his entertainment then. For Ryuk, Light’s battle against the smartest detectives in the world was fun, but the idea of him becoming a God was not.
