Deadpool Found a Better Way to Stop Kilgrave Than Jessica Jones

[ad_1]

Deadpool’s personal brand of annoyance and constant chatter just gave him a MAJOR edge over one of the most fearsome foes from the MCU Netflix shows.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the story “Purple Craze” from Deadpool: Black, White & Blood #2, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

One of Marvel’s most deplorable antagonists is Zebediah Killgrave, aka the Purple Man. Introduced in Daredevil #4 by Stan Lee and Joe Orlando, the villain is capable of compelling anyone to commit any act and he’s proven to be a cruel and manipulative monster. He’s come up against heroes like the Avengers and Daredevil and played a major role in the origins and overall story of Jessica Jones. He even made his television debut as the chief villain of the Jessica Jones Netflix series, played by David Tennant.

His control over others isn’t perfect, though. Doctor Doom proved that beings with sufficient willpower can fight off his control, while Luke Cage revealed in New Avengers that it’s possible to weaken the effects of his powers either by utilizing drugs or telepathic abilities. But Deadpool just discovered a new (and perfect) way to combat him — by being creatively annoying. In “Purple Craze” by David Lapham, Maria Lapham, Pete Woods, and VC’s Joe Sabino from Deadpool: Black, White & Blood #2, Deadpool comes up against the Purple Man and uses his personal brand of comedy and irreverence to effectively annoy the villain into defeat.

After breaking loose of a SHIELD jail-cell, Purple Man ends up gaining a formidable henchman in Deadpool. But all of his commands are subverted by the ‘Merc with a Mouth, as he’s able to find workarounds for his various commands. When he orders Deadpool to give himself a swirly off-panel, Deadpool just drinks all the water in the toilet. While he’s been specifically commanded to only move when commanded to do so, Deadpool keeps on talking, undermining Purple Man’s plans and quietly insulting him to his face.

Deadpool is able to increasingly twist his words against him, keeping himself one step ahead of the villain. When Purple Man demands to be taken someplace safe to escape Daredevil, Deadpool brings him to the very top of a skyscraper — arguing that by his logic, being so elevated and with a full 360′ degree view around the top of the building makes their location indeed a safe space. Even after being forced to rescue him, Deadpool continues to make things more difficult for Purple Man. He “makes food” out of paper, and can’t hunt down Daredevil without leaving Purple Man exposed (and thusly breaking his earlier command). Even ordering Deadpool to shut up just forces Deadpool to casually draw out his explanations in crayon.

It’s ultimately his crayon plan that allows Deadpoool to win when he quietly leaves the stove top on and tricks Purple Man into ordering him to strike a match. This allows him to actually defeat Purple Man despite being under his control — leaving the villain to be recaptured by Daredevil and brought back for confinement. It’s a deceptively brilliant plan, utilizing Purple Man’s own tendency to get lost in his sense of control to lure him into making mistakes that could get him killed.

It’s Deadpool’s quick thinking and logic that keeps him from following through on Purple Man’s commands. The story also implies that it was a personal fight between them — with Wade ultimately looking repeatedly at a picture of Innaz, the mutant bounty hunter known as Outlaw and occasional love interest for Deadpool. If Deadpool has the right kind of incentive — like bringing down one of Marvel’s cruelest villains for what is likely any number of crimes committed — then he might be the most clever hero in the Marvel Universe.
