The Marvel Unlimited series Deadpool: Invisible Touch recently concluded with the Merc With a Mouth finally gaining a little respect.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Deadpool: Invisible Touch #5, available now on Marvel Unlimited.
Deadpool has always had a hard time when it comes to gaining the respect of the superhero community. Although he’s no longer the villain he was when he was first introduced in New Mutants #98 (by Rob Liefield, Fabian Nicieza, Steve Buccellato, and Joe Rosen), it’s safe to say that most heroes view Deadpool as a nuisance at best and a threat at worst, thanks to his overly-talkative nature and his violent tendencies. Even heroes who have gotten to know Deadpool well, like Spider-Man and Wolverine, still prefer to avoid him when they can.
However, the final issue of Deadpool: Invisible Touch #5 (by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Geaffo, Rachell Rosenburg, and Joe Sabino) implies that Deadpool has found an influential advocate within the superhero community. Having seen a side of him that few others have witnessed during their recent partnership, the Fantastic Four’s Invisible Woman appears to have warmed up to Deadpool, and her approval could be what finally earns the Merc with the Mouth the acceptance of Marvel’s other heroes.
Deadpool and Invisible Woman’s interaction with each other began in the first issue of the series when each of them attempted to recover a stolen flash drive containing the legal patents of Mr. Fantastic and Iron Man’s inventions from an illegal underground auction. After the lesser-known Spider-Man villain Spot escapes with the drive, Deadpool suggests that the two of them team up to track him down. Although Invisible Woman initially rejects Deadpool’s offer, she relents after he points out that he has more experience with navigating the criminal underworld than she does.
At first, Invisible Woman treats Deadpool with blunt contempt, scorning his attempts to make conversation and openly worrying about the damage that could be done to her family’s reputation if she’s seen working with him. However, as she spends more time with him, Invisible Woman’s opinion of Deadpool gradually improves. While picking up a tracker that can trace Spot, Invisible Woman learns that Deadpool’s healing factor isn’t as effective at repairing brain damage after the Thing clobbers him, partially explaining why he’s so forgetful. As they approach Spot’s hideout, Invisible Women asks Deadpool why he’s going out of his way to help her, and Deadpool admits that he wanted to use the flash drive to secure visitation time with his daughter Ellie, something that Invisible Woman sympathizes with as a mother of two.
Upon entering Spot’s hideout, the two are met by Spot and the client who hired him to steal the flash drive, Dr. Doom. During the fight that follows, Doom blasts Deadpool with a beam of energy from his gauntlet, knocking him unconscious. Witnessing this, an enraged Invisible Woman immobilizes Doom and chastises him for his cruelty, telling him that while Deadpool can heal from any injury, he still feels the pain. In response, Doom removes his mask, revealing himself to be a disguised Tony Stark, who hired Spot to steal the flash drive back for him. While Tony makes light of Deadpool’s injuries, Invisible Woman tends to his wounds and tells Tony to leave. When Deadpool comes to his senses and asks what happened, Invisible Woman tells him that he defeated Doom and Spot on his own, allowing him to believe that he saved the day.
The Fantastic Four is one of the most respected superhero teams in the Marvel Universe, and Invisible Woman’s newfound respect for Deadpool could help him finally find a respectable place among them. Deadpool has strived to put his bloody past as a murderer-for-hire behind him, working to atone for his past misdeeds and trying to behave more heroically, but most of the heroes have been unwilling to give him a chance to prove himself. However, Invisible Woman’s endorsement could go a long way in repairing his tattered reputation, as her compassion for others has made her a beloved figure within the superhero community.
If Invisible Woman is willing to look past Deadpool’s faults, her actions could inspire other heroes to give Deadpool a second chance as well. With her assistance, Deadpool could finally become the hero he’s always wanted to be.
