The development team behind the upcoming Dead Space reboot intends to provide players with a “fully unbroken experience” from start to finish.
Though details on the upcoming Dead Space reboot are scarce at the moment, publisher EA recently pulled back the curtain a little on the sci-fi survival horror game by introducing key members of the development team at Motive Studio. A glimpse into the direction of Dead Space‘s development was provided, including one mention of the entire game being a single uninterrupted sequence.
“The super-fast [Solid-State Drives] on modern systems allow us to load and unload really fast,” said creative director Roman Campos-Oriola on the developer’s blog post. “Our intention is to offer a fully unbroken experience, it will be an uninterrupted sequence shot, from the start screen to the end credit, without interruption.”
Increasing immersion by eliminating load times altogether appears to be the aim of this unbroken experience. Senior producer Philippe Ducharme added, “The objective we gave to the whole team was to have players pick up the controller and completely lose track of time. Like, they play through the entire experience without putting the controller down. That’s how immersive we want our game to be, that people just dive in and don’t come out until the credits roll.”
With the Dead Space reboot doubling as a remake of the original 2008 title, the developers also noted how they will be honoring that game’s legacy as they build this new project from the ground up. New assets, character models and environments based on the original designs are being fully rebuilt in the Frostbite engine, though Motive assured fans that it would be “keeping the same story and the same structure.”
“The main source of inspiration is the original vision for Dead Space,” said art director Mike Yazijian. “We make sure we’re following the story, the art direction, everything, out of respect for the original game. We are taking the opportunity to also do away with some things that don’t work, and make sure the game stays relevant to modern audiences — but even that has to be done surgically.”
As for when players will finally be able to get their hands on the highly-anticipated game, a recent report suggested Dead Space is currently on track to release sometime in 2022. The report also mentioned more information on the game is expected to be shared later this year, following the teaser shown during July’s EA Play Live event. As for now, though, all that is known for sure is that when the game eventually does launch, it will be made available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC.
