Writer Tom Taylor reveals the cover for Dark Knights of Steel #2, which sees Batman and Green Arrow facing off.
Writer Tom Taylor has revealed the cover for DC Comics’ Dark Knights of Steel #2, created by artist Yasmine Putri.
Dark Knights of Steel is a reimagining of the DC Universe set within the Medieval Era, and sees the world’s heroes ditch their capes for shining armor and regalia. The series will be twelve issues long, with the cover being the latest reveal of what may come from the story. Apparently, a Batman vs Green Arrow duel may be in the cards for this fantastical retelling.
The bottom half of the cover sees the dark knight (quite literally, in fact) brandishing a sword against the emerald archer. Other faces featured on the cover are believed to be this world’s iterations of Superman, John Constantine, Black Lightning and Supergirl. The full scope of the story has yet to be revealed, but seeing the similarly-equipped heroes face off is something fans could now see.
There have always been glaring similarities between Batman and Green Arrow, the Arrow television series seemingly turning Oliver Queen into more of a Bruce Wayne character than how he behaves in the comics. In the comics, both heroes have “caves” and safehouses that they operate out of, an extraordinary amount of wealth (though not in current Batman comics) and similar tools and gadgetry. However, while Oliver tends to be more upbeat in the comics, Bruce has always been drawn to the scowl as opposed to the smile.
Of course, it is unclear what differences in backgrounds, skill sets and inventory these two may have in this Game of Thrones version of the DC Universe. While Green Arrow’s gimmick can hold up against a background designed for a Robin Hood-esque character to thrive, Batman has clearly undergone some reformatting. The hero’s new look bears resemblance to his Element X attire brandished in the finale of Dark Nights: Metal.
This story also marks another book where these two will interact. Currently, the only main title to see these two frequently share the page with one another is the Justice League series helmed by Brian Michael Bendis. Green Arrow has been snaking his way into additional books though, such as Checkmate, The Flash and the upcoming Aquaman/Green Arrow: Deep Target set to release in October, one month prior to Dark Knights of Steel. Batman on the other hand, can be found in numerous titles ranging from Nightwing to Harley Quinn and beyond.
Dark Knights of Steel #1 will be written by Taylor with art and cover art by Yasmine Putri, who also created this second issue’s cover. Variant covers for the first issue will be created by Joshua Middleton and Wayne Reynolds. The first issue goes on sale Nov. 2, 2021.
