The United Planets’ version of the Justice League got a brand new name and quickly lost custody of one of the universe’s most dangerous criminals.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Justice League #64 by Brian Michael Bendis, Steve Pugh, Nick Filardi and Josh Reed, on sale now.
The reintroduction of the Superman villain Synmar Utopica also came with the reappearance of the United Planets’ newest team of protectors, complete with a new name. When they were first appeared, this collective of alien warriors from various worlds that comprise the United Planets called themselves the United Planet Brigade. Now though, they are going by the United Order.
While definitely more impressive, their handling of Synmar’s captivity was less so. While they announced themselves to the United Planets, they failed to keep a watch on Synmar, who managed to escape and then made a beeline for Earth to finish his battle with Superman.
First debuting in Superman #28 by Brian Michael Bendis, Ivan Reis, and Dave Sharpe, the United Planet Brigade was formed as a sort of Justice League of space, acting as the preeminent protectors of the United Planets. They’ve only appeared once before, arriving just after Superman defeated Synmar with the help of the Synmar military. The United Planet Brigade appeared and then took Synmar into custody, intending to have him tried for his crimes on Synmar and Earth.
Unfortunately, that didn’t last long. Synmar was held long enough for the United Planets to convene a trial for his numerous crimes. The United Planet Brigade, now going by the name the United Order, interviewed him prior to this to hear his side of the story. They found him unrepentant for trying to take over his planet and kill Superman. They had joined the trial to act as witnesses to make sure that Synmar remained in custody, viewing him as a threat to the United Planets’ mission of intergalactic peace.
But the trial only got so far as their appearance on the witness stand. For when Synmar was meant to be brought before his judges, the guards found that he had escaped his cell. Prince Zerep of Tamaran accused the other Order members of not listening to him, hinting that there was some lapse in security measures that he spotted but the others ignored. Regardless of who was wrong or right at that moment though, the present objective was clear: Recapture the Synmar Utopica, who was now on a rampage.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t do it. The United Order was founded to act as the honor guard of the United Planets, but Synmar was created to be a countermeasure to Superman, one that even the Man of Steel had difficulty defeating without help. The United Order, along with whatever normal support the United Planets could provide, was quickly overwhelmed by Synmar’s sheer might.
The only thing the United Order could do as Synmar escaped was warn the Justice League that he was coming to Earth. But it isn’t the best introduction that the elite warriors of the United Planets were so easily handled by one criminal. Then again, considering who Synmar is, it is not fair to judge them too harshly either. This is still a new team and they need time to figure out how to work together cohesively. They just didn’t have enough time to do so before Synmar escaped.
