Writer Joshua Williamson promises that DC’s upcoming Dark Crisis event will be a fun read that elevates the next generation of heroes to new heights.
DC’s upcoming Dark Crisis event is not what fans expect, according to writer Joshua Williamson.
In a trailer for Dark Crisis, the writer detailed what fans should expect to see. Unlike past Crisis events, which focused on DC’s established heroes taking on larger-than-life threats, Williamson explained this new storyline will focus on younger, less-experienced characters. The writer said that this direction gives Dark Crisis a unique identity and honors the spirit of DC’s generational heroes.
Dark Crisis is a seven-part miniseries event written by Williamson, drawn by Daniel Sampere, colored by Alejandro Sánchez and lettered by Tom Napolitano. It centers on the return of Pariah, a survivor from Crisis on Infinite Earths, who believes he can bring the Infinite Multiverse back to life by destroying Earth-0. DC’s trailer for Dark Crisis showed that the series will feature characters such as Jon Kent, Yara Flor, and Jace Fox, the heroes of Future State, in prominent roles. Despite the book’s bleak premise, Williamson says Dark Crisis won’t be all doom-and-gloom. “This event is going to be a very fun, different event for the DCU, and it is not going to be what you expect.”
The road to Dark Crisis begins in Justice League #75 by Williamson and artist Rafa Sandoval. The oversized issue will tell the story of the “Death of the Justice League,” claiming the lives of nine out of the team’s ten members. While DC has yet to confirm who will perish in the issue, the trailer for Dark Crisis shows a memorial outside of the Hall of Justice featuring statues of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Barry Allen), Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern (Jon Stewart), Aquaman and Hawkgirl.
In the wake of Justice League #75, the DC Universe reacts to the loss of its heroes in Dark Crisis #0 FCBD Edition. This special issue will be available for free on May 7 and features a story from Williamson and artist Jim Cheung, as well as numerous creators who DC has yet to reveal. Speaking on how the issue commemorates the memory of DC’s finest, Williamson said, “We are telling a story about the Justice League and showing why the Justice League matters and why the Justice League is great.”
After the release of Dark Crisis #0 FCBD Edition, DC will publish Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1. This one-shot will be available May 31 and is written by Williamson, Jeremy Adams, Brandon Thomas, Chuck Brown, Stephanie Phillips and Phillip Kennedy Johnson, and drawn by Clayton Henry, Dan Jurgens, Fico Ossio, Emanuela Lupacchino, Leila Del Duca and more. It centers on the various survivors of the DC Universe as they decide for themselves how they will honor the legacy of their predecessors.
Dark Crisis #1, written by Joshua Williamson, drawn by Daniel Sampere, colored by Alejandro Sánchez and lettered by Tom Napolitano, goes on sale in June from DC Comics.
