I Am Batman #5 is an introspective journey for the Fox family as Jace Fox finds his resolve amidst an intense altercation with the Magistrate agents.
DC Comics’ Future State event explored a possible darker future for the DC Universe with its heroes trapped in a bleak reality. However, hope soon returned. From the shadows emerged younger heroes who followed in the same footsteps as their iconic predecessors. During this time, writer John Ridley introduced the world to the first black Batman in Future State: The Next Batman, which became a sensational hit. Timothy “Jace” Fox fights for justice in a Gotham City that’s ready to explode. The Magistrate program that grew under his father’s work prepares to go online. While Lucius’s tech readies to usher in a new era of totalitarian rule, Batman stands in his father’s way.
Written by John Ridley with artwork from Christian Duce, Juan Ferreyra, and Laura Braga, I Am Batman #5 opens with Jace Fox in a pinch. The Magistrate agents in their new T.A.L.O.S armor are close to unstoppable. While Jace faces them, he remembers his training and turns the table on his attackers. As he makes a narrow escape from the Magistrate, he reminisces about the follies of his youth and what led him to become the Batman. Meanwhile, Jace’s sister Tamara has woken up from her coma, and their mother wants to move to New York for Tamara’s treatments.
I Am Batman #5 is a huge turning point in Jace’s crimefighting career. Since the inception of the series, the new Batman has been treated as a pretender which has compelled Jace to demonstrate that his deeds are indeed worthy of the mantle he bears. Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley illustrates how this perception plays on Jace’s psyche, and lets him forge a new path despite the adversity in his way. The issue has multiple narratives that merge to bring a new beginning for the Fox family. While references are made to past events, they act as catalysts for Jace to strengthen his resolve to protect Gotham.
Three different artists harmonize on I Am Batman #5 to create a visually enthralling read. The artwork of Juan Ferreyra has a brooding atmosphere that symbolizes the inner turmoil within both Jace and the citizens of Gotham City. While Christian Duce depicts the antagonistic side of things, artist Laura Braga showcases the issue’s action. Braga gives an up-close look to the violent combat in Gotham’s alleyways. Colorist Rex Lokus employs varying degrees of umber tones for the backdrop, giving the issue a somber appearance. Other than Batman, Lokus favors bright colors when portraying other characters — even the Magistrate agents have eye-catching blue tints. Fittingly, Lokus end the issues on a brighter palette, inspiring hope for Batman’s future.
I Am Batman #5 is an emotionally moving tale that ends on a high note, ushering in major changes for Gotham City’s main continuity. After Punchline’s torture, Lucius Fox felt powerless against vigilantes. This issue finally lets Lucius confront the twisted reality he has helped shape and pulls the brake on his self-destructive mission. I Am Batman #5 shows the promising beginning of Jace’s crimefighting future and how it’ll change his family forever.
