DC’s Batman Is About to Bring Back a Fan-Favorite Gotham Academy Character

[ad_1]

A standout character from Gotham Academy makes her long-awaited return in Batman #119, written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Jorge Molina.

Upcoming solicits for Batman #119 hint at the return of  Mia “Maps” Mizoguchi, one of the central characters of DC’s fan-favorite Gotham Academy series, which ran from 2014 to 2017.

Maps is set to appear in the backup story of Batman #119, scripted by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Jorge Molina. Also providing art and a backup script is Maps co-creator, Karl Kerschl. After a classmate of hers goes missing, Maps teams up with Batman to solve the mystery in a triumphant return to form for the superhero-obsessed teen, who made her debut in Gotham Academy‘s first issue as a bubbly, enthusiastic foil for the series’ more subdued and troubled protagonist, Olive Silverlock. The issue is set to come out Jan. 4, 2022.

Originally one of the last series to emerge under DC’s New 52 banner, Gotham Academy was written by Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher, with art by the likes of Cloonan, Kerschl and Babs Tarr. Unlike other Batman-related books at the time, Gotham Academy shied away from superheroes and instead focused on young adult drama and mystery. The series, which ran for 18 issues plus one annual, delved into the world of a private boarding school inhabited by the children of Gotham City’s elite. It was followed up by a 12-issue sequel, Gotham Academy: Second Semester, as well as a six-issue crossover with BOOM! Studios’ Lumberjanes series.

Maps, the younger sister of Olive Silverlock’s ex-boyfriend Kyle and an occasional friend of Damian Wayne, proved to be a standout character in Gotham Academy, crossing paths with the likes of Killer Croc, the Terrible Trio and members of the Bat-Family over the course of the series. She even had her own makeshift Robin costume and most recently filled in as Batman’s sidekick in an out-of-continuity ghost story in March’s Batman Black & White #4 which was written and drawn by Kerschl.

Batman #119 not only features Maps’ return but also brings Batman Inc. back into the foreground in its main tale, written by Williamson and penciled by Molina. The international crimefighting organization that Bruce Wayne started during Grant Morrison’s transformative tenure on the Bat-Family books from 2006 to 2013 has a shadowy new benefactor, and Bruce is determined to find out who it is.

The issue picks up on threads begun in Batman #118 and sees Bruce Wayne departing Gotham City in the aftermath of Fear State, leaving his home in the care of the Bat-Family and tangoing with a new Grim Reaper-esque villain named Abyss.

Batman #119 goes on sale on Jan. 4 from DC.
