DC provides CBR with a look at Batgirls #4, by Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad and Jorge Corona.
DC has provided CBR with an exclusive preview of Batgirls #4, by Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, Jorge Corona and Sarah Stern. In the preview, Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain have a major revelation about their friendship.
At the start of Batgirls, Cass, Stephanie and Barbara Gordon moved to The Hill. While Barbara urged them to keep a low-profile, Cass and Stephanie quickly started investigating a street artist named the Tutor, who has been entrancing people with a mixture of Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow’s fear gas and nitrous oxide and stealing their things. Along the way, they encountered a number of mysterious and, potentially, villainous characters.
In Batgirls #4, Cass and Stephanie head to Mr. Dhaliwal’s bookshop. Inside, the titular owner, whom Cass and Stephanie have helped in the past, gives Cass a free book called “The Runaway.” However, their transaction is interrupted by Mr. Greene — another one of their neighbors — coming to pick up an order. Cass and Stephanie tail Mr. Greene, as they suspect he’s up to no good. They’re able to trail him for a little while, but they’re soon interrupted by Charles Dante, an art therapist that is also one of Barbara’s ex-boyfriends. Cass and Stephanie remain unsure what to make of Charles.
After Charles leaves and they lose Mr. Greene, Cass asks Stephanie about Mr. Dhaliwal having called them besties. Stephanie explains the concepts and says, “Growing up the way we did… Those are difficult to come by. I dunno. I used to wonder what it was like to be normal, to have friends, let alone a best friend.” The implication is then that Stephanie and Cass, who both had incredibly traumatic upbringings, have found a best friend in each other.
