A Jorge Molina variant cover for DC vs. Vampires #1 reveals a frightening look at Hal Jordan’s more sinister side when viewed in the dark.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for DC vs. Vampires #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

A variant cover for DC vs. Vampires #1 reveals the true terrifying visage of Hal Jordan — but only when viewed in the dark.

Shared by DC’s Batman group editor Ben Abernathy on Twitter, Jorge Molina’s variant cover of DC vs. Vampires appears to only be a relatively standard image of Hal Jordan, showing his Green Lantern ring off and looking heroic. When viewed without light, however, the glow-in-the-dark nature of the cover becomes evident and Hal’s face twists into a monstrous grimace, complete with the sharp teeth of a vampire.

“Bucket list achievement unlocked with this sick glow-in-the-dark cover courtesy of Jorge Molina (and [logo designer] Darran M. Robinson helping make it perfect),” Abernathy tweeted.

Hal’s sinister form on the cover mirrors the twist in Issue #1 of the 12-issue series, which is written by James Tynion IV and Matthew Rosenberg and illustrated by Otto Schmidt. There, Hal Jordan met an injured Andrew Bennett — of I, Vampire fame — on the steps of the Hall of Justice. Hal had Bennett confess everything he had learned about a secret vampiric plot to take over the human world in the wake of the death of Mary, the Queen of Blood and defacto ruler of all vampires in the DC Universe.

Once Hal obtained the information and made it clear that Bennett had told nobody else, he brutally murdered Bennett with sunlight created by his ring. Flashing his telltale sharp teeth at the last moment, Hal revealed himself as both a vampire and an undead spy planted within the Justice League.

DC vs. Vampires #1 ends with Batman receiving a letter that Bennett sent prior to his untimely demise. The letter informs Batman of the impending human and vampire war, as well as the fact that the now-deceased Lex Luthor created a serum in his dying moments — a crucial factor that might aid in both curing vampirism and battling the hordes of nosferatu gearing up to take over the world.

Set in an alternate out-of-continuity reality, DC vs. Vampires is similar to the fan-favorite series DCeased, where the Justice League faced off against the zombie apocalypse. Aside from Green Lantern’s glow-in-the-dark transformation, other variant covers for the series have featured similarly chilling bloodsucker versions of the company’s heroes — for instance, a Francesco Mattina variant for DC vs. Vampires #3 shows a feral vampire Superman.

DC vs. Vampires #1 is on sale now.
