While the DC Universe is filled with loners and solo heroes, it’s also well-known for teams like the Justice League and Teen Titans that brought some of these solo acts together over the years. Of course, some of these heroes have also developed even closer ties with other individual heroes to create some dynamic partnerships.
These dynamic partnerships have lasted over the years and survived universe-wide reboots and one Crisis after another, weathering the storms due to the strength of their friendship or their dedication to crime-fighting. We’ll be taking a closer look at a few heroic partnerships in the DC universe that might make other solo heroes jealous.
10 Hawk And Dove’s Partnership Has Survived Multiple Deaths And Betrayals
Brothers Hank and Don Hall were the first heroes to take on the role of Hawk & Dove, following their empowerment by the Lords of Order and Chaos while they attempted to save their father’s life. The brothers were close but didn’t always have the best partnership, though their time together was cut short by Don’s death in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Hank was soon partnered with a new Dove named Dawn Granger and their partnership began to flourish. however, Hank’s betrayal in events like Armageddon 2001 and Zero Hour saw Dawn join with her sister Holly as the new crime-fighting duo. Unfortunately, Holly would be killed by Hank before his redemption, and he would return to the role of Hawk alongside Dawn’s Dove.
9 Green Arrow And Black Canary Always Seem To Find Their Way Back
Some fans might think of the partnership between Green Arrow and Green Lantern that saw them traveling across the country together as they became close friends. However, Oliver Queen’s strongest and longest-lasting partnership is with Dinah Lance/Black Canary.
The pair first began working alongside each other as members of the Justice League, though they soon fell in love. While the relationship has been on and off for years and erased entirely with reboots, Green Arrow and Black Canary still always manage to find a way back to each other, further proving the strength of their bond.
8 Huntress And Power Girl Were Earth-2’s Next Generation Dynamic Duo
DC has no shortage of confusing character origins thanks to the numerous reboots the line went through over the years, and the original Huntress and Power Girl are no different. Hailing from Earth-Two, Helena Wayne was the daughter of her world’s Batman and Catwoman, while Karen Starr was the Kryptonian cousin of Superman.
While the pair had established a close bond prior to their erasure by the Crisis reboot, they were reimagined again by the New 52 reboot. The characters were set up as the next generation Dynamic Duo following the death of their parents, and they even carried their own title as Worlds’ Finest before falling victim to yet another reboot that abandoned the modern takes on the heroes.
7 Big Barda And Mister Miracle Found Love In The Hell Of Apokolips
There are a few DC partnerships that feel like they were forged and strengthened by the fires of hell, as the old saying goes. However, in Mister Miracle and Big Barda’s case, it’s actually a pretty accurate statement. Scott Free was the child of Highfather on New Genesis, though he was sent to Apokolips to be raised by Darkseid as part of peace terms between the two planets.
There he learned the art of escape and first met the Female Fury named Big Barda. The two formed a tight bond that developed into romance and they escaped Apokolips together, eventually getting married and becoming members of the Justice League together.
6 Hawkman And The Atom Shared A Series And Developed A Tight Bond
While the two heroes don’t work together as much anymore, Carter Hall/Hawkman and Ray Palmer/The Atom used to be close friends and occasional partners who even briefly shared a comic series when their solo titles experienced low sales. Atom and Hawkman’s friendship further developed during their time together as members of the Justice League of America.
The pair even had a special move called the Atom Slingshot which saw Hawkman flinging Atom using his slingshot in a well-named move. While they were separated by time and line-wide reboots, the long-lasting friendship made a return in Hawkman‘s latest series during the Rebirth era.
5 Damian Wayne And Jonathan Kent Are The Super Sons of Tomorrow
One of the newest partnerships in the DC Universe is the friendship that formed between young Damian Wayne/Robin and Jon Kent/Superboy, who became known as the Super Sons of Tomorrow. Their friendship mirrors the unique partnership between their fathers (Batman and Superman) though they have the added benefit of having the original World’s Finest behind them.
While their friendship isn’t quite what it was now that Jon Kent has gotten much older and taken over as a new Superman and Damian struck out on his own away from the Batfamily, they can still count on each other when needed.
4 Harley Quinn And Poison Ivy Moved From Partnership To Romance
While they didn’t start out as heroes, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have walked a long road together on a path of redemption. Poison Ivy began her path towards anti-hero thanks to events like No Man’s Land while Harley Quinn recently even joined the Batfamily following Joker War.
However, the two former villains and members of Gotham City Sirens had already developed a strong and lasting friendship that slowly evolved into a romantic relationship that is only now being explored in the comics as well as on the Harley Quinn animated series.
3 Flash And Green Lantern’s Friendship Has Extended To The Legacies
Barry Allen and Hal Jordan worked together on the Justice League and developed a close friendship as The Flash and Green Lantern, respectively. However, the original characters to use those names (Jay Garrick and Alan Scott) has similarly formed a close friendship even earlier during their time with the Justice Society of America.
Even when the Flash and Green Lantern titles were passed down to new characters like Wally West and Kyle Rayner, the friendship between the heroes remained strong, even though the dynamic was switched between the long-time superhero partners.
2 Booster Gold And Blue Beetle Quickly Became Life-Long Best Friends
DC’s Blue And Gold is following the modern adventures of long-time BFF’s Ted Kord/Blue Beetle and Michael Jon Carter/Booster Gold, which reunited the former members of Justice League International after Kord’s death in Infinite Crisis.
Booster Gold and Blue Beetle quickly became friends during their time with the JLI due to their shared sense of humor, love of practical jokes, and zany get-rich-quick schemes. Despite all the humor, their strong friendship has persevered through death, time travel, and universal reboots.
1 Batman And Robin Are DC’s Dynamic Duo Regardless Of Who Wears The Cowl
One of the greatest partnerships in the DC Universe is also one of the first, as Batman and Robin debuted as the Dynamic Duo way back in 1940’s Detective Comics#38. The first iteration of the team was Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, though others like Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne would take on the role of Robin over the years.
Even when Bruce Wayne was forced out of the cowl, the Dynamic Duo continued with Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne in the roles of Batman and Robin, respectively. As long as there is a Dark Knight in Gotham, chances are good that he’ll have his own Robin at his side, regardless of who’s under the masks.
