He’s been a spy, taxi driver and more, but in April, Future State teases that Dick Grayson will leave the Nightwing mantle for something else.
Future State teases a transformation for Nightwing in April.
DC has unveiled their solicitations for the month’s upcoming issues including Future State #12, which promises a final confrontation with the Next Joker. However, the issue’s solicitation also states that Dick Grayson will become something “new” within the pages of the title, and it certainly wouldn’t be the character’s first time taking on a new role in comics.

- FINAL SHOWDOWN WITH THE NEXT JOKER! Peacekeeper Red, a.k.a. Jason Todd, and the Next Batman take on the Next Joker, but will their combined abilities be enough? Meanwhile, Hunter Panic and Harley Quinn try to keep Tobias Whale alive against a whole army of Jokerized robots! Plus, Nightwing becomes something…new?
There are actually a number of hats or, more appropriately, cowls that Dick Grayson has held in comics. The obvious answer to many is that before he took up the mantle of Nightwing in Tales of the Teen Titans #44, he had long served as Robin alongside Batman. However, he has actually stepped into the role of his mentor on more than one occasion, a notable example being his time sporting the cape following Batman: Battle for the Cowl.
Grayson did not stop adding on identities after being the caped crusader though, and in the last decade, he has been the super spy Agent 37, an amnesia-ridden taxi driver (despite fans who want to forget the Ric Grayson era of Nightwing) and briefly a talon assassin. Additionally, though he is not in the suit, the current Teen Titans Academy series confirmed that Dick took up the mantle of Red X at one point in his life, bringing a plot point from the popular Teen Titans cartoon into DC Continuity.
Speaking of Red X and Teen Titans, Nightwing has already been shown to have taken on a new role in the Future State timeline. In Future State: Teen Titans, it was revealed that the hero had worked with Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke and adopted a costume similar to the assassin for a time. So far, this version of Grayson’s life hasn’t been seen in Future State: Gotham, appearing mostly as he did in the two-issue Future State: Nightwing.
Whatever he may become in the alternate timeline, the opportunity for Dick to serve as another hero again will be opening up soon being that Justice League #75 will kill off nine Justice League members in April — and Batman may be on that chopping block. Being that writer Tom Taylor has brought back many elements of Dick Grayson’s old life and classic Nightwing content (blue stripes on the suit included), taking up the mantle of Batman again would be a big change after the last year of his titular solo series.
