DC Reunites a Major Villain Alliance for a Dark Mission

[ad_1]

In Infinite Frontier, Darkseid reassembles a powerful group of villains for a mission that could throw the DC Multiverse into darkness.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier #6, now on sale from DC Comics.

Darkseid has been moving behind the scenes since the end of Dark Nights: Death Metal, preparing his own nefarious plans while the rest of the multiverse tried to repair itself. But this has all built up to Infinite Frontier, which have been revealed to only be the opening salvo of his schemes. To finish his plan, he’s going to need some help from his oldest allies.

Infinite Frontier #6, by Joshua Williamson, Xermanico, Romulo Fajardo Jr and Tom Napolitano, reveals that Darkseid has reassembled his closest advisors to his side once more — setting aside the internal squabbles of Apokolips as they prepare to try and claim the greatest untapped dark power source in the DC Omniverse.

Infinite Frontier Darkseid Family

Over the years, Apokolips has been most famously ruled by Darkseid and his most loyal retainers. But there has always been an undercurrent of in-fighting despite their nominal connection as a royal family. The modern incarnations of characters like Granny Goodness and Steppenwolf have frequently been at odds — or committed to their own missions, such as when Granny Goodness found herself coming up against Harley Quinn. Meanwhile, Darkseid has gone through a radical number of changes — such as when he was reborn as an infant and then forced to work alongside the Justice League to regain his power. Coming out of Infinite Frontier though, he’s been established as his ultimate form, a combination of Darkseids from across all of existence.

Now, this ultimate Darkseid has rallied together his family once more. After drawing the attention of Justice Incarnate and other heroes during his apparent plan to control the Black Lantern and open up a level of control over the multiverse, Darkseid is revealed to have a much grander scheme in mind — gaining dominance over the mysterious and seemingly endless power of the Great Darkness. To that end, he’s going to need more power and allies. First, he recruits X-Tract — the Earth-2 Cameron Chase who’d previously been working as a multiversal bounty hunter — as his new Black Lantern. She accepts the position, and is introduced to his restored family.

Darkseid openly declares that while they have all feuded in the past, it’s time for them to come together and work towards this common goal. The allies included long-standing figures from the 4th World — Granny Goodness, Kalibak, Steppenwolf, and DeSaad. The fifth member of the group is actually in part responsible for his earlier demise: Grail, the daughter Darkseid had with an Amazon and was introduced in and was introduced in Justice League #40 by Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok. Considering her power — and standing — as a direct child of Darkseid, it’ll be interesting to see how this relatively new player bounces off the rest of her family.

It’s a worrying prospect for the DC Universe. Even with the Great Darkness and the assorted powerhouses who seek it (like Nekron, the Empty Hand, Eclipso, and the Upside Down Man), almost none of them have as much experience causing chaos and destruction quite as the dark New Gods of Apokolips. Their new family unit, restored around a single purpose, might be enough to even contend with multiversal heroic forces like Justice Incarnate — let alone the heroes of Earth-0. With Infinite Frontier setting the stage for a serious villainous conflict in the coming months and years, it’ll be interesting to see how one of DC’s most dangerous family units adjusts to a brand new future.
