One dangerous multiversal villain has united two villains that have both taken down the Justice League singlehandedly, which is bad news for one duo.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Deathstroke Inc. #4, on sale now from DC Comics.
Deathstroke Inc. may have one of the most intriguing stories in the DC Universe right now. The initial premise of bitter rivals Deathstroke and Black Canary working together was interesting enough. Since then, the series has introduced the mystery of who their employer, the shady T.R.U.S.T. organization, really is and more. In the last issue, it was revealed that the Crisis villain Libra was in charge and seeking to bring balance to the multiverse. In the latest issue, just how they plan to do that has been revealed and it involves two of the Justice League’s most powerful enemies.
Slade and Canary decided to work together but were attacked shortly after in Deathstroke Inc. #4 by Joshua Williamson, Howard Porter, Hi-Fi, and Steve Wands. Black Canary believed that she, her allies, and T.R.U.S.T. were being attacked by the Legion of Doom. Only after they had killed everyone but her was she able to fight back. When she took down the Legion’s leader, Lex Luthor, she discovered that it was all an illusion and the person she had actually attacked was Slade.
The entire attack was a ruse, orchestrated by Libra and enacted by their two deadliest allies, Dr. Destiny and Prometheus. The ordeal was one of Destiny’s illusions, and Prometheus made everything feel even more real. T.R.U.S.T. claimed that they were hiring superheroes to bring down the various villains of the DCU, but that wasn’t true. The villains that Deathstroke and Canary had been taking out this whole time were the ones that refused to join T.R.U.S.T. and disagreed with their plan to bring balance to the multiverse. The two villains working with Libra were on board with T.R.U.S.T.’s plan.
Dr. Destiny was created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky and first appeared in Justice League of America #5 in 1961. John Dee was a small-time crook but his genius intellect allowed him to create a device that took down the entire Justice League. His “will-deadener” rendered every member of the League powerless, including Superman. He would have launched them all, powerless, into space if his device hadn’t briefly lost power itself. After this first encounter, he created a device that could turn dreams into reality, as seen in this issue. The only way the League could stop his immense new power was to hypnotize him into being unable to dream.
A few individuals have gone by the name Prometheus but the one seen here is the most prominent and was created by Grant Morrison and Arnie Jorgensen. In his first appearance, New Years Evil: Prometheus #1, he infiltrated a tour of the Watchtower satellite base. Once onboard, he systematically took down the entire Justice League with unique methods designed to counter and defeat every single member, not unlike Batman’s misused plans from the “Tower of Babel” story. If it wasn’t for Catwoman’s unforeseen intervention, he would have destroyed every single one of Earth’s heroes.
Essentially a criminal version of Batman, Prometheus saw his parents, who were also criminals, gunned down in front of him. Because of this, he vowed to destroy all forces of justice. This quest to become the ultimate criminal led him to “the Ghost Zone” (which Kryptonians know as the Phantom Zone). There he built himself a small house in its infinite emptiness and created an armor that could download information directly into his brain. This included the techniques of some of the best fighters in the world, including Batman, which is how he bested the Dark Knight.
As Dr. Destiny’s dream reality had all but defeated Canary and Deathstroke, Prometheus sent them both to his one-time home in the Ghost Zone. Now they’re stuck with no way back and Slade is on the verge of death, having taken the full force of his partner’s Canary Cry in the dream reality.
Prometheus and Dr. Destiny are each powerful enough on their own, with both having a history of taking down the combined might of the Justice League singlehanded. The two of them teaming up is bad news for all Earth’s heroes, let alone the unlikely duo from this series. Even worse, however, is their leader. If Libra is capable of uniting these two powerful villains behind their cause of multiversal balance, then this new iteration of the villain must be very powerful. Perhaps too powerful for Deathstroke and Black Canary to handle.
