Detective Comics #1041 sees Bruce Wayne stripped of resources and returning to the reliable Batman costume that he wore from the ’60s to the ’90s.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for “The Jury” Part 1 by Mariko Tamaki, Dan Mora, Jordie Bellaire and Aditya Bidikar in Detective Comics #1041, on sale now from DC.
The latest issue of Detective Comics features the triumphant return of a Batman costume that Bruce Wayne hasn’t consistently worn in over two decades.
As revealed by series artist Dan Mora on Twitter, Batman returns to his classic blue and gray outfit with a yellow chest oval in the issue’s main story, which is the first part of a new arc entitled “The Jury.”
Bruce is currently operating out of downtown Gotham City without the cushion of his family fortune, which he gave to Lucius Fox in the aftermath of last year’s “Joker War” storyline. To survive as a streamlined, stripped-down Dark Knight, Bruce stores his resources in mini-Batcaves throughout the city. “The Jury” opens with his sewer outposts destroyed by Roland Worth, an old-money Gotham patriarch who blames Batman for the death of his daughter.
With the majority of his gear gone, Bruce requests aid from Oracle, who alerts him to an “old stash by the docks.” Within this cache is the classic outfit, which Bruce dons before crashing a meeting between The Penguin and Roland Worth. The Penguin takes note of Bruce’s old getup, exclaiming: “Batman. So glad you could join us. In blue!”
Mora’s interpretation of the suit features pointed shoulders similar to how the late Norm Breyfogle drew it during his acclaimed run on Detective Comics in the ’80s alongside writer Alan Grant. The yellow oval Bat logo also features extra points around its middle, similar to its appearance in the 1989 Batman film.
While Batman has occasionally used the yellow oval on recent Batsuits – mostly notably for his Batman Inc. suit shortly before DC’s New 52 reboot – he has very rarely worn it with a blue and grey color scheme outside of flashback appearances. Detective Comics #1040 featured one such flashback sequence, with Batman wearing the costume while fighting the Joker — a possible hint that Bruce would revert to his older suit just one issue later.
The blue, gray and yellow oval Batsuit debuted in “The Mystery of the Menacing Mask,” a story written by John Broome and illustrated by Carmine Infantino in 1964’s Detective Comics #327. The cover of the issue promoted the costume as a bold “new look” for Batman, who would wear variations of it for the next 35 years.
During the late ’90s following the Knightfall story arc which saw Bruce Wayne recovering from a broken back, the Batsuit grew noticeably darker and lost its blue trunks. Following the No Man’s Land arc of 1999, Batman fully embraced darker tones and ditched the yellow oval for a black emblem reminiscent of his Year One costume, designed by Dave Mazzucchelli.
