The concept of sidekicks has been around since Batman first took Dick Grayson in as his ward. Since then, heroes have taken young people with the desire to do good and worked with them, hopefully mentoring them to be better people.
In the decades since, all the teen heroes have undergone some pretty heavy changes in their lives. It’s the nature of the game— the more stories around their lives exist, the more they have to change to remain entertaining. Just like their mentors, sidekicks often have their powers grow and develop, often becoming something completely different from what they once had. Sometimes these changes are permanent, other times they’re temporary, but they always make for an entertaining read for the audiences reading their stories.
8 Wally West’s Control Over The Speed Force Has Grown Over The Years
These days, Wally is often shown to be even faster than his uncle Barry, but that wasn’t always the case. For a while in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Wally had a limit on how fast he could run. Any faster and it would aggravate his heart, meaning he was a liability in combat.
This was meant to be a way to slow down the character and place a limit on him, but eventually he would master his speed force powers and become capable of moving as fast as the speed of light as well as gaining other speed-based powers.
7 Cassandra Sandsmark Went From Being Powered By Clothing To Having Powers Of Her Own
When Cassandra was first introduced to the Wonder Woman comics, she was just the daughter of one of Diana’s old friends. She didn’t have any special powers and was more like a plucky sidekick.
Then one day, Wonder Woman was fighting a Doomsday clone and Cassie began wearing the Sandals of Hermes and the Gauntlet of Atlas to give her super-strength and speed. After a few outings, Zeus had offered a boon to Cassie and she took the opportunity to claim some real superpowers for herself, making her Wonder Girl all the time.
6 Damian Wayne Had Superpowers Thanks To Darkseid
When Grant Morrison killed Damian Wayne at the end of their Batman run, Bruce was unable to accept the loss. Damian’s coffin had been implanted with a Chaos Shard which originally belonged to Darkseid, and Bruce managed to outsmart Darkseid and use his power to charge the Chaos Shard and bring his son back to life.
But Damian didn’t come back the same as before— instead, he had incredible superpowers reminiscent of Superman himself. It took the Justice League making Damian use his powers over and over to drain them entirely, allowing him to go back to being a normal pre-teen with assassin training.
5 Tim Drake Briefly Had Super Speed
Tim Drake usually keeps away from the magical abilities, as he tends to focus on technology and science over anything else. However, when he was much younger he followed a case into another country. There, the Boy Wonder learned about a special flower that could become a drug to enhance someone’s speed to superhuman levels.
With that power, he was able to not only take down a large number of enemies on his own, but surpass Lady Shiva’s natural martial arts talent as well. Fortunately for the villains of Gotham, this power-up was only temporary, and Tim Drake has never tried to rely on an ability like that since then.
4 Donna Troy Has Gone From Powerless To Darkstar
Donna Troy was originally granted the gift of superpowers while in Themyscira so she would be able to keep up with the other Amazons. When Donna learns that her son would grow up to become a ruler named Lord Chaos though, she gives up her powers and becomes human.
She remains a human for a time, but eventually she’s recruited into an organization known as the Darkstars. Donna gains a measure of super-strength and hi-tech masers, working both as a hero on Earth and with the Titans until the organization is eventually rendered defunct.
3 Garth Has Gone From Aquaman Powers To Magician
Garth was a member of Aquaman’s family, originally trained by Aquaman himself because he too had been shunned by the people of Atlantis. For years Aqualad had the same powers as Aquaman: Super strength and speed thanks to his body adapting to the pressures of underwater, and the ability to talk to sea life.
But later on he was trained in the magics of Atlan, gaining not only powerful magic abilities but the power to freeze or boil water at will. Garth is an understated magician that might actually be one of the top mages in the DC Universe.
2 Roy Harper Has Gone From Gifted Archer To Black Lantern
Roy Harper has always been one of the better weapon users in the DC Universe. He has the ability to turn anything he’s wielding into a weapon, thanks to a martial arts style known as Moo Gi Gong. Moo Gi Gong users are masters of 108 different types of weapons.
But beyond that, Roy has recently been given a Black Lantern ring since his return to life. This ring allows him to generate energy constructs the same as a Green Lantern, but he can’t control the ring perfectly thanks to Darkseid having recently gained control over the Black Lantern Corps, meaning sometimes he can take control over Roy, forcing him to obey Darkseid’s will.
1 Jason Todd Has Gone From Martial Artist To Someone Who Can Negate Magic
Jason Todd has long been considered the black sheep of the Batman family, and his journeys have often taken him far away from Gotham. While working with the Outlaws, Jason eventually learned the ability to negate magic from Talia Al Ghul.
He’s also learned how to summon weapons known as the All-Blades from his own soul. These weapons are able to take down any truly evil magical threat, and make him one of the unique members of the Bat-Family in terms of being able to fight magic.
