Being the Man of Steel is already a huge job, but even among constant villainous threats, there are many other downsides Superman deals with daily.
Superman is one of the most popular heroes in the DC universe. He is incredibly powerful and cares deeply for all of humanity. While it may seem like being Superman is a walk in the park, there are definitely some major downsides to being the Man of Steel.
Superman has been focusing on saving the world since he was very young, and it’s mostly all he has known. This would be a lot to handle for anyone, and there are many aspects to Superman’s job and life that might turn any other aspiring hero away.
6 Superman Carries Survivor’s Guilt
Superman is the last son of Krypton, rocketed off the planet just before it exploded into dust. While there have been a few other Kryptonians who have survived, for the most part Superman carries the legacy of an entire planet with him. Over the years, whenever there is a hint of surviving Kyrptonians, Superman drops everything in order to try to help out his people. Villains like Zod constantly accuse Superman of not caring for his people or not living up to the legacy he was left with. All these things weigh on his conscience, and he’s carried this guilt for most of his life.
5 No Rest For The Wicked…And Superman
When you are responsible for protecting the whole planet, there is always a new crisis happening. From all of Superman’s villains who are constantly causing trouble in Metropolis to the intergalactic politics he is embroiled in, Superman never has time to relax or rest.
While Lex Luthor is planning and scheming in his high rise offices, General Zod is deciding how he will conquer the planet, and on top of all that, Superman is helping with with the multiple environmental crises that rack the planet everyday. It is a continual barrage of pain and despair, and somehow Superman still manages to be a symbol of hope.
4 He Lives A Life Of Secrets
Despite being a symbol of truth and justice, Superman has spent most of his life having to lie to everyone he cares about. He has had to lie about his identity, his competence at work, and even his height. He does all this lying with the intention of protecting people close to him, but it doesn’t make it any easier. Clark eventually decided he was done with the lies and revealed himself to the entire world as both Clark Kent and Superman. But even this move caused hurt amongst other members of the Superhero community who now saw this as a vulnerability to them all.
3 The Most Powerful Threats Always Come For Him
Superman being the most powerful man in the solar system means that everyone wants to destroy him. He is always at the top of the villains’ list for who needs to be taken out in order to complete their ultimate plan. From Darkseid to Mongul, every intergalactic threat comes for Superman first, knowing that he is the key to Earth’s defense.
Doomsday tore through both Metropolis and Superman, causing untold destruction. Brainiac is constantly trying to bottle Superman and his city. Mr. Mxyzptlk comes all the way from another dimension just to mess with Superman and his life. Everyone comes for Superman, and he is responsible for stopping each and every one of them before they can harm innocents.
2 His Loved Ones Are In Danger
Now that his identity is out in the open, everyone connected to Clark Kent is in grave danger. While revealing his identity took away the stress of lying, he now has to think about all the people he put in danger who weren’t before, and he now has an even bigger responsibility to protect the people closest to him. While Jon Kent is powerful enough to take care of himself and Lois is one of the most capable people in the DC universe, Superman, like any father and husband, is always worried about protecting his family and loved ones.
1 Earth Isn’t The Only Planet He Is Responsible For
If Earth didn’t have enough going on, Superman also feels responsible for the whole galaxy. More than ever, he’s splitting his time between Earth and the larger solar system. He was instrumental in creating the United Planets and actively works as an ambassador for them. It’s amazing that he is able to balance protecting the Earth and the galaxy and still have time for his family. With all his responsibilities, it must be an incredible amount of stress for him to deal with. Even a man who can move faster than a speeding bullet must struggle with keeping up with everything he has to do.
