DC: 10 Times Villains Got In Way Over Their Head

[ad_1]

Supervillains have a bad tendency to not fully appreciate the implications and consequences of their actions. They tend to use their tremendous power to challenge a status quo that they hate for one reason or another, but, in doing so, they tend to unleash a whole new kind of hell that they, frankly, should have foreseen.

This is no different for many of the villains of the DC Comics Multiverse. The rogues, villains, and various other manners of antagonists of this Multiverse have a bad habit of unleashing unholy power and being surprised when it comes back to bite them in the end.

10 Bane Working Alongside The Flashpoint Batman, AKA Thomas Wayne

Throughout much of Bane’s most recent campaign against Batman in Tom King and Mikel Janin’s legendary run on the title, it seemed like the onetime Knightfall villain was in control of his scheme against Batman. However, he had a shocking partner in Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s father from the Flashpoint timeline–where Bruce was killed and Thomas became Batman.

However, Bane didn’t really understand the kind of partner he had. Thomas Wayne was brilliant, ruthless, and vicious. When it seemed like Bane was going to lose to Batman, Thomas shot Bane, putting him into a brief coma.

9 Black Hand Becoming The Champion Of Nekron, Avatar Of Death

Black Hand, aka William Hand, became the champion of Nekron, the Avatar of Death, during Blackest Night by Geoff Johns, Ethan Van Sciver, Peter Tomasi, Dave Gibbons, and Ivan Reis. While Black Hand saw this as an opportunity to feed his death fascination, it was really Nekron’s violent attempt to end all life in the universe.

To his credit, Black Hand was left largely unscathed when Nekron was defeated by the Green Lantern Corps and their Lantern Corps allies. He was later found on the Indigo Lantern Corps homeworld being put into forced rehabilitation.

8 Every Villain Who Made A Deal With Neron During Underworld Unleashed

Neron Underworld Unleashed

Neron is a demonic entity that sought to unleash chaos and havoc across the world and to taste a pure soul in the form of Shazam. In doing so, he made deals with countless villains and even a few heroes–offering them gifts or greater power in exchange for their souls.

Neron almost ended the world in this mad bid, and it took a coalition of heroes to enter Hell and defeat Neron. Every villain who allied with Neron received some degree of punishment for their involvement and had their gifts ultimately taken away. Regardless, they almost lost their entire world thanks to their helping Neron.

7 The Riddler Working Alongside Hush During The Latter’s First Caper

When Hush first arrived on the scene, he began working with the Riddler. Hush, whose true name was Tommy Elliot, had a grudge against Bruce Wayne since their childhood. Riddler in turn told Hush that Bruce Wayne was the true identity of Batman. This led to Hush’s first great campaign against Batman, which involved many of the major rogues in Gotham City.

Hush almost succeeded, but Batman was aided by a reformed Harvey Dent. Afterward, Hush went after Riddler and tried to kill him.

6 Every Variation Of Batman That Worked For The Batman Who Laughs

By the end of Dark Nights: Death Metal by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, it becomes apparent that any and all variations of Batman that worked with the Batman Who Laughs were being played and didn’t fully fathom how dangerous this entity is.

The original Dark Nights were all either killed or disposed of. The Dark Nights army that appeared in Death Metal were just pawns to help the Batman Who Laughs achieve godhood and reshape the universe. That said, none of them seemed to care much about the repercussions of all of this.

5 The Secret Society Of Super-Villains Unleashing The Crime Syndicate

Lex Luthor Forever Evil

The Secret Society of Super-Villains that arose during the early stages of the New 52 were all working towards a goal they didn’t truly understand. Ultimately, this ended with them unleashing the Crime Syndicate, the evil Earth-3 counterpart to the Justice League, upon Earth-1.

The resulting chaos almost ended the world, with the Crime Syndicate showing little-to-now concern or allegiance to the Secret Society who helped them enter this world. That, as well as his disdain for any form of Superman–Ultraman of the Crime Syndicate included–, led Lex Luthor to form the Injustice League to bring down the Crime Syndicate.

4 The Secret Society Of Super-Villains Working For Darkseid

Secret Society Gorilla Grodd Captain Cold

The original Secret Society of Super-Villains was actually a stealth plot by Darkseid intended to sew chaos and destruction on Earth to make it easier for the armies of Apokolips to take over. His agent on the team was a vigilante known as the Manhunter, but the Manhunter was intending to turn on both Darkseid and the Secret Society.

After several defeats and Manhunter betraying Darkseid, the Lord of Apokolips ultimately decided to abandon this project and concerned himself with other things. This is to the benefit of the Secret Society, as they surely would have been betrayed by Darkseid had his plan succeeded. The team went on after Darkseid abandoned it, but it was ultimately supplanted by the “Villains United” iteration of the Secret Society.

3 Black Manta Unleashing The Sea Gods Upon The Earth

Black Manta, in service to the Legion of Doom, helped the team kill Poseidon and unleashed the Triumvirate of Sea Gods upon the world. This plan was intended to gain a powerful artifact called the Tear of Extinction from these Sea Gods for the Legion of Doom, but Black Manta went off-script. He saw this as an opportunity to finally kill Aquaman and abandoned the Legion’s plans.

This Triumvirate of Sea Gods were deities worshipped on other worlds, and their plans here almost destroyed the Earth. Black Manta once again failed to kill Aquaman regardless, and both he and the Sea Gods were ultimately defeated.

2 Any Supervillain Who Gets Enlisted Into Working For Suicide Squad

Peacemaker Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad is usually a one-way trip for any villain that gets enlisted into Amanda Waller’s covert team. The team promises a reduced sentence for every completed mission, but, with the exception of Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, every rogue who joins the team either dies or is stuck on the group forever.

Deadshot is a perfect example of this, as he has been stuck with the Suicide Squad ever since he first joined (except for the few times he was able to escape for a little while), and he was on the team for years. However, Waller never let him go, and he was recently killed while serving on the team.

1 The Legion Of Doom Working In Service To The Goddess Perpetua

Death Metal Legion of Doom

Lex Luthor and his Legion of Doom had no idea what they were getting into when they sought to resurrect Perpetua and serve her. This led to Luthor doing things he never would have otherwise, even mutating himself to become a Martian/human hybrid. Luthor even abandoned his crusade against Superman at this point. He betrayed other members of the team to Perpetua and helped bring about the end of all things in his war against the Justice League.

However, Perpetua was never loyal to Luthor, and she even replaced him with the Batman Who Laughs once he proved himself to her. This led to Luthor having his “Apex Predator” powers stripped, and Perpetua remaking Earth as the Batman Who Laughs saw fit.
