Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista reveals he was not asked to voice his character Drax for the upcoming animated MCU series What If…?
Professional wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista will not voice his Guardians of the Galaxy character Drax the Destroyer in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe animated series What If…?, because Marvel Studios never asked him to.
Bautista responded to a Twitter user who inquired why the Guardians of the Galaxy star was not included on the cast list of What If…?‘s returning MCU talent, including Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Josh Brolin, Samuel L. Jackson and Chadwick Boseman. “Let’s start with I was never asked,” Bautista disclosed. The revelation that Marvel did not ask Bautista to return for What If…? shocked many fans, including Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn, who bluntly replied, “What.”
Bautista’s name was notably absent from Marvel’s earlier press release which revealed additional cast members that had not yet been confirmed, such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Don Cheadle. Although not voiced by Bautista, Drax will appear in What If…? in a storyline featuring Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill. While fellow Guardians Nebula and Yondu will be voiced by their MCU actors, Karen Gillan and Michael Rooker respectively, neither Bautista nor Zoe Saldana, who played Gamora, will lend their voices to the upcoming series. It is unconfirmed at the time of writing whether Saldana was asked by Marvel to reprise her role.
The two Guardians actors were not the only MCU talent missing from the What If…? cast list. MCU veterans Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson will not be voicing their characters, Iron Man, Captain America and Black Widow, respectively, in the upcoming series. Spider-Man star Tom Holland was also absent from the press release, suggesting that someone else will voice the zombie-hunting version of the web-slinger. Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Elizabeth Olson (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch) and James Spader (Ultron) were also not listed among the returning cast members despite their characters appearing in What If…?.
Bautista shared earlier this year that he intends to leave his role as Drax in the MCU following his appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, written and directed by Gunn. “We work in trilogies, and James Gunn has already announced that it’s his last film, and when James is done, I’m done,” he explained. “I’m also going to be 54 years old by the time Guardians 3 comes out, and just like, the shirtless thing is getting harder and harder for me.”
What If…? will make its premiere Aug. 11 on Disney+.
