The latest Star Wars: Vader comic, the Dark Lord went on a murderous rampage, and Darth Sidious thought it was absolutely hilarious.
Warning: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: Darth Vader #19, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Darth Vader’s short temper and his propensity for wanton violence means he is not someone you ever wanted to disappoint. Clearly Vader had no problem with taking out his own loyal servants to make a point, and that happened yet again in Star Wars: Darth Vader #20 by Greg Pack, Raffaele Ienco, Alex Sinclair and VC’s Joe Caramagna.
Vader has never been a stranger to hunting down rebellious detractors to the Empire. However, ever since the War of the Bounty Hunters crossover event, he has had a new kind of target. With the knowledge that Crimson Dawn had infiltrated every corner of the galaxy, Darth Sidious tasked his apprentice with hunting down those moles, and Vader has been on an order-making rampage ever since.
In Darth Vader #20, Vader entered a Crimson Dawn base and found a list of sympathizers, so he and his hunting allies made coordinated attacks at a number of locations. Vader’s target was Palpatine’s Imperial Throne Room, but there was a problem. Sabe — one of Padme’s former handmaidens — had joined Crimson Dawn as a way to get revenge on Vader and had planted a list of fake Crimson Dawn associates. So, Vader’s rampage actually targeted Imperial loyalists.
When Vader entered the thrown room, he found his master holding council with a gaggle of his advisors. They were members of the Acolytes of the Beyond, but Vader brutally slaughtered nearly all of them. After the fact, Vader and Sidious had a conversation and revealed that both of them already knew that Vader’s list was substantially flawed. Only a single victim of Vader’s onslaught was actually a member of Crimson Dawn. Nevertheless, Vader had decided to kill them anyway because he had promised to bring order to the Empire, and they were agents of Chaos.
The best part of the whole thing was Sidious’ response to the whole affair. He knew that the advisors were more or less loyal, but without hesitation, he let Vader kill of them. In fact, he simply laughed at their brutal demises. While that may seem cruel, it’s simply in-line with the Sith philosophy of “might makes right.” As an order, the Sith gain power from combat, domination and killing, so Sidious letting Vader have a free go at advisors was mere entertainment for Sidious.
Of course, this wasn’t the first time that Vader had gone on a slaughter-filled rampage, and it wasn’t the first time that he enjoyed doing it. The first time he did so was on Mustafar when he killed the Separatist Council. It was the first time that he could use all of his pent-up rage without the confines of the Jedi Order and was one of the things that helped to solidify Anakin’s transformation into Vader. Since then, he’s made a habit of merciless killing. He had a heyday when killing the Bokku and the Hutt Council and in Rogue One’s infamous hallway scene. So, it’s not surprising that he went ahead and took out some of the Acolytes of the Beyond because, in doing so, he was simultaneously building his power, entertaining his master and sending a message. Clearly, no one was safe in the Empire — even loyalists.
