Marvel’s Dark Ages has just revealed how humanity survived the darkness that swept the globe, and which heroes were key in making that happen.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Dark Ages #2, available now from Marvel.
The Marvel Universe has seen some truly dark times over the years, but few worlds have been as dark as the world of Marvel’s Dark Ages. With a cosmos-wide electromagnetic pulse taking out all electronics, the technology which has kept the world running was reduced to a thing of the past. In its wake, the survivors have had to rebuild a brand new world, and Marvel’s greatest telepaths have proven to be the most important part of it.
When the Unmaker fell, so did the lights all across the globe, not to mention throughout the rest of the universe. The ensuing chaos was immediate, and as it swept the world, millions of lives were lost. Even still, not all hope was lost, and many of those who had dedicated their lives to saving the world before it ended found themselves working to create a new one in the darkness. As Peter Parker reveals in Dark Ages #2 by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber and VC’s Joe Sabino, these efforts were successful in giving rise to supercities around the world. Not only did the remnants of humanity once again have homes, they even found ways to stay connected thanks to Marvel’s most powerful telepaths.
The Unmaker may have left humanity in the dark, but it was the combined efforts of heroes such as Professor Charles Xavier who brought people together in spite of it. In a coordinated effort alongside the likes of Wolverine and Captain America, Xavier’s message reached every corner of the globe still standing, promising a better way of life than what the world had been relegated to. Together, the heroes established their network of supercities with the center of power residing deep within Wakanda where Jean Grey keeps everyone linked.
It’s an incredible feat to see accomplished, especially so soon into the current post-apocalypse. Then again, fans are well aware of what Marvel’s superhumans are capable of on their own. From what mutants have built for themselves on Krakoa to the reaches of the symbiote Hive, the Marvel Universe has never really needed technology to keep it afloat, and Dark Ages is the starkest reminder of that yet.
The new society that Marvel’s heroes have constructed isn’t as sprawling as what they might be used to, but it is the grandest testament to humanity’s resilience nonetheless. Sure, there are still plenty of threats waiting in the shadows for their moment to strike and any one of them could potentially do irreparable harm to the world as it now stands. Yet no matter what comes next, there is no doubt that the world is in good hands, especially when they’re the kind that are so deeply in touch with one another.
