Charlie Cox details the arduous process of filming the scene between Daredevil and Punisher where the hero is chained to a chimney.
Daredevil star Charlie Cox explained why the acclaimed rooftop scene in Season 2 required him to spend all night chained to a chimney.
Cox spoke to Forbes about his new show, Kin, as well as the Netflix series Daredevil. While fans are eager to see Cox return as the character, he’s just happy he got to play Matt Murdock for so long. Of course, it wasn’t always fun.
“We had some intense scenes on rooftops,” Cox said. “I remember there were a couple of days where we were shooting like 14 pages in eight hours because it was in the summer, we only had eight hours of darkness.”
“One of those nights I was chained to a chimney and we would lose too much time if they had to take me out every time I had a minute,” Cox continued. “So I pretty much, other than [a meal break], I just sat there chained to a chimney all night just to try to save time so we could get as many takes as possible to get the scene right.”
The scene in question came during Season 2, when Frank Castle kidnaps Daredevil and chains him to a chimney. The two spend much of the episode trading philosophies, and Cox, it seems, was forced to actually stay stuck to the chimney for the episode-long imprisonment. But Cox was pleased with the result and loved working with Jon Bernthal.
“He’s tremendous isn’t he? Look, as soon as someone like Jon is cast it’s exciting and it’s nerve-wracking at the same time and you know that you’ve got to bring your A-game,” Cox said. “But also, my experience with actors that good is it actually makes it easier for the other actor because it brings you out of yourself; it forces you to be spontaneous and free and not self-conscious.”
Cox is clearly a huge fan of Bernthal and wants to see him return as Punisher. He also hopes Krysten Ritter gets to play Jessica Jones again. As for whether he’ll be back as Daredevil, he doesn’t know — or won’t say. But he’s glad he got the chance to win fans over and portray the iconic hero.
“You just work your socks off and you get stuck in every area of the show that you can, the character, from all of the stunt work to the accent, to the fact that he’s a lawyer, the history of the comics — I read everything I could read,” Cox said. “Just getting stuck in it and hoping that the producers have chosen the right guy. I feel a tremendous relief that it went as well as it did and people have responded so well to my portrayal.”
Kin airs Thursdays on AMC+.
