Danny Trejo Poses With the Rancor in BTS Photo

Danny Trejo, who recently made a cameo in The Book of Boba Fett, celebrates his Star Wars debut with a group photo of him, Fett and their new pet.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Book of Boba Fett, “Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa,” now streaming on Disney+.

Actor Danny Trejo is officially a Star Wars character thanks to The Book of Boba Fett.

Trejo shared a behind-the-scenes photo of himself and lead actor Temuera Morrison posing in their costumes, the prop head of a Rancor standing next to them. “Machete finally made it into space, Star Wars!” he wrote. “It was great working with Temuera Morrison and others on #TheBookOfBobaFett!”

Debuting in the series’ third episode “Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa,” Trejo’s unnamed Rancor Keeper is introduced as the handler of a calf gifted to Fett by the Hutt Twins as part of their territorial truce. While conversing with Fett, the trainer reveals that young Rancors imprint themselves onto the first individuals they see — hence putting blinders on it before arriving — and that, opposed to what many believe, a Rancor is capable of showing deeper human emotions beyond aggression. It’s unclear if Trejo will appear in The Book of Boba Fett‘s remaining episodes, though his and Fett’s interaction concluded with the bounty hunter-turned-Daimyo demanding that he learn to ride the Rancor, which could hint at more for the character.

Since starring in 1995’s Desperado, during which Trejo learned that he and Book of Boba Fett director Robert Rodriguez were cousins, the two have been longtime collaborators. Their most notable partnerships include From Dusk Til Dawn and the Spy Kids franchise, with Trejo reprising his Spy Kids role as Isador “Machete” Cortez in two adult-oriented Machete films, both spun out from a faux-trailer in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 Grindhouse feature.

On why he showed an interest in continuing Boba Fett’s story, Rodriguez, who noted his usual averseness to “premier properties,” felt that the iconic Star Wars bounty hunter’s lack of screen time in the original trilogy meant that it was “almost like starting with an original character.”

Alongside its new characters, The Book of Boba Fett has brought in a number of established Star Wars figures from other media. Its second and third episode saw the live-action debut of Black Krrsantan, a Wookie bounty hunter in the Hutt twins’ employment who previously worked with Fett during Marvel’s Star Wars comic run. Likewise, both episode’s flashback sequences featured appearances by the Pike Syndicate, a Star Wars: The Clone Wars-era crime family who formally aligned with Darth Maul’s Shadow Collective. The Pike’s spice trade was also referenced in 2018’s Solo, during which Han Solo and his heist team attempted to steal unrefined coaxium from the syndicate’s Kessel mines.

New episodes of The Book of Boba Fett air Wednesdays on Disney+.
